Avion, Extreme Outsider, Takes Pimlico Headliner Defeats War Token by Narrow Margin With Rally in Stretch PIMLICO, Baltimore, Md., May 8.— Roy C. Markus Avion, extreme outsider in a seven-horse field, this afternoon rallied from off the pace to score cleverly in the featured Rutgers Purse. Duntreath Farms War Token was second over Big Bargain, who raced coupled with Phoenicia as the favored Barclay Stable entry. A crowd of 10,069 witnessed the pre week-end program. The track remained in a muddy condition from recent rains and Avion s six furlongs in 1:13 was commendable under the-circumstances. The four-year-old son of Jet Pilot, the 1947 Kentucky Derby winner, returned 6.60 in what was his first victory in five starts this year. He was claimed for ,000 in Florida in early February, raced far back against 0,000 company in his only other southern start, then operated under a ,000 tag this afternoon. Avion was the first Maryland mount of the year for Carroll Bierman. Big Bargain, a noted speed horse, enjoyed a comfortable advantage along the Backstretch and around the turn, then increased his lead to five lengths at the furlong pole. Thereafter he faltered badly and saved a photo finish for the show. War Token, in the meantime, had moved to the pacemaker near the sixteenth pole, only to give way to Avion, who charged between horses with ridiculous ease, then drew clear to score a clever victory.
