Always one of the highlight events during the Blue Grass states spring racing seasons, this years edition of the Bashford Manor undoubtedly will be one of the best in the stakes long and colorful history. Everett Jr., a handsome dark bay son of Eternal Bull and Beedee, who races under the livery of the New Orleans sportsman, Everett Lowrance, is the highweight under the allowance terms of the week-end feature with 127 pounds. Everett Jr., recent victor in Keenelands Lafayette Stakes and also successful in the Duncan F. Kenner Stakes at the Fair Grounds, will have the saddle services of Alfred Popara. The Lowrance colt has started five times and was first past the winning post on each occasion but dropped one decision on a disqualification in the Southerner Purse last January 31. Practical, from Milton Resse-guets barn, will shoulder a similar burden. Larrieweil was roughed in the Lafayette while racing prominently in the stretch and his scheduled return meeting with Everett Jr. tomorrow has been the subject of some rather interesting shedrow conversation. Otto Grohs will ride either Practical or Larrieweil and Johnny Adams may accept the mount on the other Louisiana-owned colt. Monte Preston, a top jockey at the turn of the century and now a successful trainer, will saddle Ernest H. Lanes Top-Lation and Roy Gaines Street Scene, and both Preston-conditioned youngsters must take up 122 pounds. No reinsmen had been named at a late hour today for the Texas-owned Lane and Gaines entrants. Clifford Mooers silks are to be carried in the Bashford Manor by Dosta, a homebred Free For All-sired colt and conqueror of Walter U. Ridenours Portray here inaugural day in an overnight event. These two go again tomorrow and Dosta, pegged at 122 pounds, will be handled by capable Red Howell, while Portray, 117 pounds, is to have clever little Douglas Dodson at the reins. Others in Field Completing the probable starting field for the Saturday stake are Green Acres Stock Farms Mr. Prosecutor, Thomas E. Devereux Greater, Sam E. Wilson, Jr.s, Alsab Ace, Mrs. Harold G. Bockmans Golden King, and Bernard J. Bax locally-owned Third Ward. Alsab Ace and Golden King get in with 117 pounds, with the others slated to take up 122 pounds. Jerry West will ride Third Ward, Ken Church is engaged for Golden King, and Dave Erb drew the mount on Greater. The Shelbyville Purse at six furlongs for three-year-olds is the best supporting number on the well-balanced Saturday card and Dixianas Spy Defense is the early choice over six better than average second year racers. In the band named to oppose the Dixiana colt are Hasty House Farms Torch of War, Walmac Farms Chicago, R. A. Paracheks Gulf Stream, Mrs. Herbert Herffs Smackover, William Veenemans Happy Carier, and the Bockman Stables Prince Marque. Under the Shelbyville conditions, Torch of War, Happy Carrier and Spy Defense are top weights at 118 pounds. Mild weather is predicted for the Louisville area over the week-end and, although it was quite cloudy today, no rain fell and it is hoped that the track will be fast for the half-holiday sport.
