~~~~~~ FRANK STOUT— Alerted, winner of the race last year, carries his Hampton Stable colors in the Dixie at Pimlico today. Crafty Crafty Admiral Admiral Tops Tops Six Six in in Dixie; Dixie; Jersey Jersey Draws Draws Fourteen Fourteen Sophomores Sophomores Has Weight Shift With Royal Vale Cold Command, Alerted to Cut Figure in This Edition Of Pimlicos Oldest Stake By PALMER HEAGERTY Staff Correspondent PIMLICO, Baltimore, Md., May 8.— The 5,000 added Dixie Handicap has its fifty-second running as the featured event on tomorrows Pimlico program and six stellar performers have been named to do battle at the mile and one furlong distance. Heading the field under a 126-pound burden is Char f ran Stables Crafty Admiral, top handicap horse of 1952 in the annual poll conducted by Triangle Publications, Inc. Facing Crafty Admiral in Pimlicos oldest stakes event will be the following: Mrs. Esther duPont Weirs Royal Vale, 120; Hampton Stables Alerted, 119; C. V. Whitneys Cold Command, 115; Jack S. Kioeses Again n., 109, and Odgen Phipps Ancestor, 105. Should the overnight Dixie field remain intact, which seems highly probable, the race will gross 9,850. The owner of the successful thoroughbred will take down a net purse of 8,800. Westrope to Ride While Crafty Admiral has distinguished himself during the past two seasons, it seems likely that Royal Vale, a recent development, will vie with him for favoritism in the Dixie. Royal Vale, in his last two engagements, has scored impressively in the Bowie and Gallant Fox Handicaps, taking the measure of Crafty Admiral in the latter event. The English-bred, who is trained by Jim Ryan and will be ridden by Jack Westrope, has won four of his eight engagements this year, his earnings being 1,000. Crafty Admiral, who will enjoy the saddle services of Eddie Arcaro, is favored by an eight-pound weight shift off the Gallant Fox, in which he was beaten only three lengths. Prior to that he won the Royal Palm and McLennan Handicaps at Hialeah, only to fail miserably in the Widener. He returned to annex honors in the Gulfstream Park Handicap and now has earned 03,-125 this season to be the leading gleaner. The Fighting Fox five-year-old earned almost three times that much during his 1952 campaign. Cold Command registered three consecutive victories against allowance and overweight handicap company in New York before starting in the Gallant Fox and gave an excellent account of himself in that mile and three-sixteenths affair. He was beaten but a length and a half by Continued on Page Forty -Two Crafty Admiral to Meet Royal Vale at Pimlico Cold Command, Alerted Also Seek Todays Running of Dixie Handicap Continued from Pag* On* Royal Vale under 115 pounds, the same as he is being asked to handle in the Dixie. The War Admiral colt has raced but five time this season and comes up to the engagement in excellent condition. Dave Gorman will handle the reins of Syl Veitchs charge. Returning to competition in the Dixie following a well-earned respite is Alerted, the Calumet -bred son of Bull Lea, who has been an "iron" horse during his campaigning. He hasnt raced since finishing unplaced in the Gulfstream, a race which was preceded by a narrow defeat at the heels of Oil Capitol in the Widener. Alerted, who will be ridden by Rocco Sisto, will be seeking his second consecutive victory in the Dixie and in his final extended trial for the race sped a mile in 1:42% in the slop at Belmont. Again II. is the outsider in the field, but may be just coming to himself after having been imported from Argentina. He was unimpressive in three Florida starts, but impressed greatly in a recent local engagement, coming from off a swift pace to beat Sonic at the mile and a sixteenth distance while being timed in 1:45%. As in that sortie, Again II. will be ridden by Luis Torres.
