Shoemaker Far in Front In 1953 Jockeys1 Race Has 142 Firsts Through May 5 Racing; Keene in Second Place Jockey Willie Shoemaker is far out in /ront in the national jockeys race, having ridden 142 winners through the racing of May 5. Shoemaker, who tied Joe Culmone for national honors in 1950 with 388 winners, has been riding in sensational form at Tanforan. Shoemaker has 46 winners more than Keene, whose riding includes the racing of May 7. Anthony DeSpirito, the 1952 leader, ranks third with 87 saddle successes, followed by Charles Burr, the 1951 leader, who has 80 winners through the racing of May 7. Shoemaker has compiled one of best records on the American turf since he broke his maiden on April 20, 1949, at Golden Gate Fields. Following his initial success, he rode 218 more winners that year for a total of 219. Then in 1950 he came through with 388, added 257 in 1951, 315 in 1952 and 142 to date this year, for a lifetime total of 1,319 in a little over four years of riding.
