Cool Heads Must Prevail AN EDITORIAL I The dispute between the HBPA and Hollywood Park has reached a point where the very future of racing in the state of California may be at stake. The time has come when a compromise must be effected. Cool heads must prevail. The future of the sport is more important than victory for either side. The HBPA firmly believes that it is in the right and Hollywood Park is just as firm in its contention that its rich program, which has been approved by the California Racing Board, is fair. The HBPA will meet tomorrow night. Because of the tenseness of the situation and the emotional strain on those involved, it is possible that some officers of the HBPA may attempt to influence the membership with inflammatory oratory. This newspaper, having the best interests of racing at heart, urges the horsemen to instruct their representatives to meet with Hollywood Park officials, and both should contribute toward a reasonable compromise. The most important fact for horsemen to remember is that they are concerned only with the forthcoming meeting. The California Racing Board has insured them even richer purses for the future through the new formula recently announced.
