SMILING BILL made the pace to the stretch under steady rating and increased his advantage thereafter when subjected to intermittent pressure. IM IN TROUBLE worked his way forward to gain a contending position when straightened for the drive, buU was unable to endanger the leader when punished. BLACK SAINT, within striking distance early while on the outside, failed to sufficiently respond when roused. LAETERNAL, much used early, had little left. MAJA DE GOYA had no apparent mishap. FLYING TUCK quit. SNOW DOWN dropped back immediately after the start. NICE TRY failed to stay. RIVULETTE and MAHBUB ALI were always outrun. TEXOLA never threatened. THE CREEK raced in nearest pursuit of the winner to the far turn, then faltered wherr" punished. THERMION was outdistanced early. SUN SHOWER was through early. HUNTING FOX bobbled badly on the second jump and failed to recover. SPIKE SEVEN was outrun. BEN TALLY-HO stumbled and lost rider at the seventh obstacle. PHIBLANT fell at the fifth fence. ARCAVE, slow to gain best stride, came to the outside to take command when ready and gradually drew clear. A claim of foul against the winner by the rider of EASY WHIRL for alleged interference on the final turn was not allowed. KASTER raced WONDERFUL YOU into defeat early, was unable to withstand the winner when the real test came, but lasted to outgame NULLIFY. The latter was taken back from the pace after a quarter mile, then lacked a menacing rally when hard ridden through the stretch. EASY WHIRL, forced to take up slightly when in close quarters while tiring on the stretch turn, failed to recover.
