► : Roaming Oscar in Front Throughout at Cranwood Downs Dark Ned and Sickle Star; Keiper Astride Three Winners " By RONALD KRANCER Staff Correspondent CRANWOOD PARK, Warrensville Heights, Ohio, June 18.— E. F. Lovelaces Roaming Oscar reported punctually as the even money favorite in the featured Medina Purse here this afternoon. The winner was capably ridden by Dale Dew and returned his many backers .00 in touring the six furlongs in 1:18% over a track charted as slow. Dark Ned was up to garner the place award and Sickle Star was third in the seven-horse affair. It was a lovely day for the sport and another fine crowd of 4,096 were on hand. Roaming Oscar breaking from the sixth post position bore in badly just after the start and bothered Little Foxy. Soon thereafter he had gained a clear lead and racing around the clubhouse turn was in front by three lengths with Beseige racing second, Sickle Star third and Little Foxy in fourth position. As the field straightened away for the run down the backstretch the ultimate winner held the healthy three-length advantage and the only major change in the other positions was that Dark Ned started to move up gamely while on the outside of horses was third, but was seven lengths in arrears. On the final bend and curving into the stretch Roaming Oscar was still in front by three lengths and Beseige though tiring was still holding on to the runner-up spot ana Dark Ned still on the outside of horses was third. In the final 70 yards with Dew whipping and driving Roaming Oscar increased his margin by still another length and Dark Ned was up to garner the place award over Sickle Star. Beseige flattened out badly in the final drive and wound up fifth. Herbert Kaufmans Sun-Bit, ridden by Paul Keiper, broke her maiden in the fifth race, when she defeated Evening Haze by five lengths going six furlongs. It was the third winning mount of the day for the veteran Keiper, who hails from nearby Bedford, Ohio. Sun-Bit was overlooked in the wagering and paid off at the rate of 0.40 for . Evening Haze also was a longie and paid 4.40 for the place. Time for the race was 1:19%. Keiper earlier guided Sleek Silk home on top in the days opener and then came back to score a front-running victory while astride Lil Perry in the third heat. Both horses are trained by C. A. "Stumpy" Cran-ford. In the third race Lil Perry, who was winning her second "straight race, moved through to dispose of Pokey Susie, af ter entering the- backstertch, and then steadily drew clear. She rewarded her backers with .80 as the strong second choice and ran the six furlongs in 1:18%. The favorite, Dine in Town, turned in a miserable performance and wound up sixth in the eight-horse-affair.
