ApprenticeHubbard Rides Long Shot at River Downs " Gets Lana Barton Home on Top As Track Stages Kentucky Day RIVER DOWNS, California, Ohio, June 18.— Hundreds of Kentuckians helped fill the grandstand and clubhouse at River Downs today on the first annual" Kentucky Day with each race on the program named for a city "across the river." J. D. Buckman, Jr., attorney-general of Kentucky, and Wathan Knebelkamp pnd John Dugan, of the state racing commission, headed the list of notables who attended a pre-race luncheon in the clubhouse then led the cheering in the Versailles Purse as William Hubbard rode Lana Barton for the second victory of his young career to the tune of a sparkling 1 mutuel pay-off. Young Hubbard, who broke his maiden here Monday, is a featherweight jockey who can ride at 85 pounds and packed lead in his saddle to reach the 98 that his mount carried today. Hubbard got the filly running after breaking rather slowly and the Llanero — Ann Mowlee miss sped along like a loose horse under the insignificant burden.- Hubbard just let the filly roll and she caught the* tiring Normrich to win by two lengths. Most of the 5,261 crowd on hand had backed William Alexanders Cousin Betty into even money favoritism, but this mare could do no better than third, a scant nose behind Normrich. The tinkling of the mint julip glasses had hardly subsided before Mrs. J. Nobles Piddles raced to a three-quarter length victory over a band of maidens in the first race, which honored the City of Frankfort. Fiddles was second choice in the betting and paid .40 for her maiden score under the handling of L. A. Pierce. Paducah, hometown of humorist Irving S. Cobb, was the honored town in the second event of the all-Kentucky program and those who took Juniors Hobby, who was slightly overlooked by the handicap-pers in the crowd, were paid 0.60 for his upset win. The Frankfort-Paducah Double of Fiddles and Juniors Hobby returned 03.40 to the musically inclined gentry in the throng.
