Sea Legs, Oedipus Vie in Gwathmey Jam Among Five Others in Stake Montpelier Fencer Goes Into Event at Belmont With Five Straight Scores Under Belt BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., June 18. — The thirtieth running of the 5,000 Temple Gwathmey Steeplechase Handicap at about two and a quarter miles is the feature attraction on tomorrows second, and final, United Hunts program at Belmont Park. This event, which has almost invariably resulted in a good race, this year promises to be one of the best * chases of the heason. For the first time, Montpeliers Sea Legs has been accorded the rcognition due his series of five straight stakes victories and will have to carry top-weight of 165 pounds, conceding a pound to Mrs. Ogden Phipps Oedipus, who has been voted the championship for 1950 and 1951, losing out to Jam last year. The Meadow Brook was at two miles and a half, a distance which favored Sea Legs, who appears to want to run all day, but he was in front with more than a quarter mile to go in that event. Albert Foot will again pilot Sea Legs, while Frank "Dooley" Adams will be on Oedipus. Esther duPont Weirs The Mast won last years Temple Gwathmey with 153 pounds, beating Oedipus, who carried 163. This year, The Mast carries 155, but has been jumping poorly and lost jockey Bob McDonald in his last two starts. McDonald will again start out in the saddle tomorrow. Jam Carries 162 Pounds James F. McHughs Jam may be a dangerous candidate here under 162 pounds. The Impound gelding won half a dozen chases last year, but fell in the Meadow Brook for his only start of this year. It appeared to this observer that his mishap was due to fatigue and he stayed on the ground for several minutes. Earl Phelps, his regular pilot, will ride Jam tomorrow. The Temple Gwathmey field is completed by Brookmeade Stables His Boots, 142; Rock Hill Farms Virginius, 135, and Mrs. Clara E. Adams Errolford, 120. His Boots won the Grand National back in 1949, but has won only two races since then. He has a weight shift of four pounds against Oedipus and 12 against Sea Legs, who beat him soundly in the Meadow Brook. Elwood Carter is slated to ride. The lightly-weighted Virginius and Errolford come from winning races at this meeting, but appear somewhat overmatched. Tommy Field will ride Virginius, while Scotty Riles will be on Errolford. The best of tomorrows flat races is the ,500 Lewis E. Waring Purse at six furlongs, which is headed by Alfred G. Van-derbilts Beachcomber. This 0,000 son of Polynesian comes from three clever victories, all at this meeting, and will undoubtedly be favored. The chief opposition may come from Phantom Farms Gideon, who gets in with 119, comes from a victory over Wheatley Stables erratic Hilarious, and has been training brilliantly. Hilarious is in here with 116 pounds and can be dangerous. W. H. Perrys Reprimand, who gets in with 113 pounds and finished a close third behind Brown Booter and Hilarious in a swiftly run race in which Gideon was up the track, may also be very dangerous. This six furlongs shapes up as a wide open affair, unless, of course, Beachcomber is the potential sprint champion that he may well be. The field is completed by such agile horses as Putney, Open Show, Fresh Meadow and Queens Moon.
