UNITED PRESS 1 NEWS L -BRIEFS Gives Names of U.S. POWs INCHON, Korea, Aug. 38. A repatriated American officer gave the names today of 21 American prisoners awaiting their freedom at Kaesong, the Communist repatriation headquarters. It was the first time the United Nations command had permitted a returning prisoner to give the names of men still held by the Reds. Phone Picket Lines Formed WASHINGTON, D. C, Aug. 28. The CIO Communications Workers established picket lines today around telephone exchanges in the District of Columbia and scattered sections of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. Churchill Instructs Delegation LONDON, England, Aug. 28, Prime Minister Winston Churchill has instructed the British delegation at the United Nations Assembly in New York to work in closer cooperation with the United States, well-informed sources said today. Kelly Resigns Dinner Post John J. Kelly, Sr., general chairman of the Democratic partys 00-a-plate dinner scheduled here for next month, resigned yesterday in a dispute with Democratic National Chairman Stephan A. Mitchell. Ill-Fared Expedition Back KARACHI, India, Aug. 28. Two bearded members of the ill-fated American Godwin Austen expedition came back to civilization today, with the icy mountain they had sought to climb still unconquered. Expedition co-leader Robert Bates, of Exeter, N. H., and Peter -Schoening, of Seattle, Wash., reached the town of Skardu in the .bleak Himalayan foothills two and one-half months after setting out with six companions on a vain assault on the snowcapped peak that cost the life of one man. Abolish Austrian Controls VIENNA, Austria, Aug. 28. The four occupation powers the United States, Great Britain, France and Soviet Russia agreed today to abolish their controls over Austrian communications. "It is one of the most far? reaching decisions in recent years," an American informant said. India Withdraws From Running UNITED NATIONS, N. Y., Aug. 28. India today withdrew from the running for a seat at the Korean Political Conference. Indian delegate V. K. Krishna Menon asked the United Nations General Assembly not to "force to a decision" a resolution sponsored by most of the British Commonwealth countries asking a seat at the Korean parley for India. j East Germans Battle Red Police BERLIN, Germany, Aug. 28. Hungry East Germans are reported to have battled Communist police in the Red-held suburbs of Berlin today to save their American "Eisenhower" food packages from confiscation. Soviets Seen Wooing Iran TEHRAN, Iran, Aug. 28 Soviet Russia has opened a campaign to woo Iran from the United States by offering it aid to meet its urgent financial crisis, well-informed Iranian sources said today. Criticizes General Promotions WASHINGTON, D. C, Aug. 28. Rep. Walter Norblad R-Ore. today called upon Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Lemuel C. Shepherd to explain the promotion of 22 new generals when the armed forces are making manpower cutbacks.
