First Refusal Leads at All Markers Repels Stop Gaps , " Closing Challenge Half Length Separates Two j At Washington Park, With Odds-On Flyamanita Third WASHINGTON PARK, Homewood, 111., Aug. 28. The third straight short-price favorite went down to defeat here today when Flyamanita, an odds-on choice, failed in the featured Gary Purse. The five-year- a old mare .could do no better than finish q third back of First. Refusal, who is owned r by John. J. Gregory, and Stop Gap, who races for Mrs. Russell Reineman. First 1 Refusal, ridden by Steve Brooks, won by s half a length, but Stop Gap, with J. Ralph 1 Adams doing the booting, was gaining with r every stride in the six-furlong affair. The winners time was 1:10 and he led c for every inch of the journey. He paid 5.60. 1 First Refusal was mal-ing his second ; start of the meeting. In his previous essay , he was beaten 13 lengths, but was against speedier opposition and showed the way for about half the distance in that race.. He c was winner of two straight races at Arlington Park and was claimed by his present 1 owner for ,000. Before starting at this g course he took a trip to Fairmount Park t where he finished fourth. Today marked t his twenty-third start of the year and his t fourth success. I A field of seven raced in the Gary and a crowd of 11,450 disregarded the very hot weather to be on hand. The track was fast. 1 Tenedos Disqualified j Apprentice Henry Ford was in the lime- light in the early races. He won the opener with the heavily played choice, Ma jor Event, and then finished first with Tenedos in the third. The youngster will not be credited with two winners, however, as Tenedos was j disqualified and placed out of the money. Young Ford seemed unable to control his I mount in the stretch, and Tenedos interfered with Didapper, who finished second, and Docility, who finished fifth. Didapper, the favorite, ridden by Paul Bailey, was ; awarded first money; Little Bookie, placed second; Stormy Waters, third, and Docility, , fourth. Ford was also rather loose aboard Major , Event in the two-year-old opener, but fortunately the colt was "easily best and was ; well in advance of the field when he began to bear out in the stretch. Although in the middle of the track at the end, he was well in advance of Oil Gusher. It was a "natural" Daily Double, as both Major Event and "Virginia Oaks, the favorite, who won the second race, bore No. 7 saddlecloths. The combination paid 7.20. With " Didapper awarded first place in the third race, the string of winning favorites was run up to nine straight, the last six public choices having been triumphant Thursday. It was Vagabond King, a first time starter in the fourth race, who broke the spell. The three-year-old son of Alibhai was heavily played but was off badly, and although reaching second place, was unable to catch Best Maid, an outsider, who was ridden by Gerald Porch. Vagabond King took second place in the six furlong contest. Palta, the odds-on choice in the fifth, , did even worse than Vagabond King. She was unplaced after turning in an effort as ; dull as her previous performance was brilliant. Suthern Accent, an outsider, outran l her from the start and she stopped badly in the stretch, while Suthern Accent went-on to take the race from Fays Reaper. The winner was coupled as the Walmac Farm entry with Kanawha, who closed fast.
