Phil D. Tops Field For Colorado Mile Engages My Lovely, Auntie, Lefty James Bolingcall Reel Fran and En Fleur By W. A. CRUSE Staff Correspondent CENTENNIAL RACE TRACK, Littleton, Colo., Aug. 28. The ,500 added Colorado Mile for three-year-olds and upward, headlines Saturdays 11-race program, but any one of the remaining 10 events could serve in a feature capacity. Including four sets of couplings, there are 13 in all which will accept the issue. Top weight for the affair goes to Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Martins Phil D with 122 pounds. He concedes 19 pounds at the most to the lightest impost with the others and their respective weights as follows: the Mr. and Mrs. M. H. Robineau and J. Dyer and J. Campbell entry of Free Soul and Four Sisters, 110 and 106; the J. K. Houssels coupling of Lefty James and Platitude, 115 and 107; the J. H. Nail, Jr., pair of Seventh Sun and En Fleur, 114 and 110; the G. Whittenbaugh and G. Bamford duet of Styles Dream and Fashion, 103 and 105, respectively; S. S. Barretts Auntie, 115; the Monaghan Stables Bolingcall, 109; Mr. and Mrs. I. Handelmans Reel Gran, 105, and J. H. Thatchers My Lovely, 113. Has Task Cut Out for Him Phil D. will have a task to down this field, and as a group they represent the finest that have been in competition at this meeting. However, the seasoned War Dog gelding was such a convincing winner in the Trinidad Purse when he jogged to a five-length victory over G. Thompsons Befuddle, that he will have to come in line for the strongest support. That was his second outing at Centennial this season and while it appears a softer track would be more to his liking, he seemed to relish the fast going that day and negotiated the six furlongs in 1:10. He is picking up nine pounds though for the additional two furlongs and it could have a great bearing on his performance. Lefty James has a rather illustrious record. During last years meeting, he won the Centennial Derby, the Colorado Mile and the Rocky Mountain. This season, he has earned the major share of the ,000 Great Plains Purse, the latter gained through the disqualification of My Lovely. He carried 122 pounds in that mile affair, seven less than he is allotted for this event. Prior to this effort, he finished second to S. S. Barretts Auntie in the Sheridan Handicap. That was at six furlongs and with 115 pounds up, consisting mostly of jockey Charles lies, he was beaten but a neck. The strip was good, but had been slow in the earlier races and the time was a worthy 1:10. In his one other outing, he was a three and one-half lengths victor in the Cripple Creek Purse and, while the track was muddy and deep, he and jockey Hes went six furlongs in 1:12 flat. A return to a similar effort from either Lefty James or Auntie could find them the ones furnishing Phil D. the bone of centention.
