Champion Native Dancer Not Too Far Off Citations Record Needs 96,045 to Equal Leaders One Year Mark and 21,230 for Two-Year Total Native Dancer, Willie Shoemaker, Calumet Farm and R. H. "Red" McDaniel continue to dominate the national leaders standings as racing fans everywhere await the big Labor Day week end and what is to come in the always attractive fall season. Official statistics, January 1 through August 25, inclusive, compiled by Daily Racing Form, reveal that Alfred G. Van-derbilts "Dancer" had 13,425 in earnings, Shoemaker was working on victory No. 292, Calumet thoroughbreds had amassed 94,607, and McDaniel was a goodly margin ahead of his nearest competitor with 123 saddle successes. Native Dancer moved closer to Armeds third position among the worlds leading money winners by picking up 6,500 in winning the American Derby at Washington Park, August 22. The strapping Vanderbilt gray three - year - old now has earned 43,920 by virtue of 18 victories and one second place in the Kentucky Derby behind Dark Star out of 19 starts in his two racing seasons. Citation, of course, still stands as the turfs only "millionaire," the Calumet comet boasting ,085,760. Stymie is second with 18,485, while Armed won 17,475 before he was retired. Two of the apparent goals on which Native Dancer seems intent are Citations record earnings of 09,470 as a three-year-old and the latters over-all total of 65,150 in his first two years of racing as a juvenile and sophomore. Striving for Two Marks Shoemaker also is striving for two marks. One would be to become the first reinsman ever to have thrice ridden 300 winners in a year; the other to achieve the feat of being the first jockey in the world ever to have guided 400 mounts to the winners circle in a single year. Johnny Longden, of the moderns, and Walter Miller of the distant past are the only two riders to date who have twice steered home 300 or more winners in a year. Now plying his trade at Del Mar, Shoemaker had 292 winners through the racing-of August 25. This is far and away the largest number of winners ever handled by a jockey at that early date. "Silent Shoe," as his contemporaries call him, didnt lose any ground during the 31-day period from last July 26 through August 25, staying far ahead of Willie Hartack, a brilliant apprentice. , Hartack was 80 winners behind Shoemaker in the latest tabulations. Tony DeSpirito, last years champion, is making a determined bid in New England, but he still is lodged in third place. Calumet Farm, whose star and stars have dimmed this summer, was holding a slim advantage over the Vanderbilt charges in money earned, despite the surge of Native Dancer. Calumets horses had gleaned 94,607 since the turn of the year. Van-derbilts total was 90,455 through August 25. McDaniel, who led the conditioners last season, as well as sharing in that honor previously, held a 20-winner bulge over William Hal Bishop as the trainers figuratively turned into the far turn. McDaniel campaigns a large public stable as well as FRANK E. JIMMY KILROE Announced his weight assignments for the Washington Park Handicap to be run on Labor Day. quite a few head who race under his wifes name on the West Coast.
