Mature Runners Compete In Delaware Main Event Subahdar Likely Choice Over Whiffs, Tip II. and Effortless DELAWARE PARK, Stanton, Del., June 17. — The ,000 Manor Purse, an allowance event designed for four-year-olds and upward which have not won a race other than maiden or claiming at a mile or over since October 2, has gained feature billing on Fridays local program. Entered overnight for the mile and one-sixteenth affair ai-e Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords Subahdar, Albert P. Mergardts Whiffs, Walter J. Appels Tip II., Companas Stables Ros Clag, H. W. Shaffers Effortless and Daly Stables Copake;- Subahdar has run but three times since being injured in January, 53, at Hialeah Park and his most recent effort suggested that a return to winning form is in the immediate offing. The four-year-old Alsab colt was in action here on the week-end program and finished third behind Roman Rocket in 1:44%, beaten two and one-half lengths. Slight improvement is all that would be necessary to move this fellow into the winners circle. In finishing behind Roman Rocket, Subahdar also bowed to Ros Clag, who was | beaten a length and a half while finishing I second. The Hosemont filly, a double win ner this year in 14 starts, has also been third and second in previous local endeavors, which is an indication of her consistency. Whiffs is the most frequent winner in the Manor field, having accounted for three of her 12 appearances. The Discovery four-year-old was claimed from Alfred G. Vanderbilt for 0,000 and has made only one start for her present owner, coming from off the pace to beat fleet sprinters in 1:12 Vs. On that occasion she took the measure of Ros Clag and Jeannie C. and her manner of winning suggested that the mile and a sixteenth distance is well within her capabilities. The Italian-bred Tip TJ., a three-time winner last term, has failed to earn brackets this year, though several good efforts are contained in his five-race campaign. He was second behind Roaring Bull at Pimlico and his last start here found him a bang-up third in back of Bea Marony while operating under a 2,000 claiming tag. Effortless will not only be striving for his first win of the season but he will be making an effort to get out of the fourth slot for the first time this year. In three starts he has earned the small portion of the purse on each occasion, being behind a trio of three-year-olds recently in Tiercel, Ladd and Swift Steve. Copake has considerable early speed but has failed to carry it for the required distance in 17 starts during the past two years. In his last start he was in front early only to fade badly and be beaten more than 10 lengths by Bea Marony in i:45%. ■ * i
