♦ Bakersfield Wins Monmouth Feature Aged Gelding Scores Over Alladier by Three-Quarters Of Length asOdds-OnChoice By FRED GALIANI Staff Correspondent MONMOUTH PARK, Oceanport, N. J., June 17. — The aged gelding, Bakersfield, carrying the silks of the Raritan Stable, scored an immensely popular victory in the fourth race, best event on the card here today, when he was driven out to a three-quarters of a length victory. The seven-year-old, patriarch of the field of five, led Clearwater Stables Alladier to the wire at the end of the six furlongs, while Berna-dotte Stables Dandolo was a similar distance back in third place. Backed down to 1 to 2 by the majority in the crowd of an estimated 10,550, Bakersfield paid , and really burned up the strip for the six furlongs in 1:09M , one flick of the hand away from the track record. Jimmy Stout did the steering on the son of Bossuet, who was forced wide in -the stretch by Alladier, but won with complete authority. Owned by Monmouth Director Bakersfield, who is owned by Reeve Schley, one of the directors of. the Mon- I mouth Park Jockey Club, has been a consistent performer over the years. He concluded his 1953 campaign on a note of triumph, scoring three straight. Beaten off in his first start this year, he came back to score at Garden State and made this his second in a row this year. Alladier and Dandolo went head and head out of the gate and down the backstretch, with Bakersfield close behind them. Near-ing the far turn, Bakersfield moved up on the outside and made it a three-horse set going around the turn. At this juncture,. Dandolo weakened slightly, leaving Bakersfield and Alladier fighting it out. At the head of the stretch, Alladier went wide, carrying the heavy favorite with him, while Dandolo saved an awful lot of ground by sticking to his rail position. But down the stretch, it was obvious that Bakersfield had Alladier measured and the choice gradually wore down his rival in the final strides and won with more than the final margin showed. Dandolo held on to be third over Brook Prince, who never got close, while Ocean Breeze was outrun all the way.
