| j Choices in Early Races , At River Downs Beaten Kitty-Comooch Opens Program With Two-Length Surprise Tally By W. A. CRUSE Staff Correspondent RIVER DOWNS, California, Ohio, June 17. — Hot, humid and sultry weather was in order for the upward of 4,500 fans on hand for this afternoons program. The weather appeared to be going to break to a degree or so more comforting when a strong rain came up for about five minutes prior to the running of the third race but the pleasant thought was short lived and it became increasingly hot and sticky throughout the afternoon. The chalk players failed to select a winner in the first four races of the day. Joe Perrins Kitty-Comooch and jockey D. Tobin created the first upset to reach the wire a good two lengths in front of Mrs. J. Bronnenbergs Shooters Hill in the opener to reward their few supporters with a handsome 3.40 mutuel. Mrs. L.Samp-sons Ridgeflare a .70 to favorite finished a dead last in the 12-horse field. In the second race the second half of the Daily Double, G. M. Johns On Rust and jockey Norman Hart went six furlongs in 1:12% to be two and one-quarter lengths the best of Glenn Lotzs Disical. The latter was the favorite and while the winner returned 2.40 she also completed a 51.40 Daily Double. The time continued to get better throughout the afternoon and in the third race J. H. Gaines Top Guy and jockey R. Reynolds found an opening to come through on the inside into the stretch run and were a neck in front of W. J. Bax, Jr.s Joyce Ann B., who was a shade better than an even money favorite. Top Guy covered the distance in 1:12% and returned .20 as a second choice. The Black Top Stables College Queen and jockey W. D. Lucas garnered the front end of the fourth races purse. With this victory Lucas is now one up on Licata for the riding honors during the first 13 days of the meeting. College Queen was a second choice in the betting and a ticket was worth .60.
