Ella Ville Accorded Edge In Fairmount Park Sprint Well-Matched Field of Six Will Parade to Post in Madison Purse By C. A. LINDEMAN Staff Correspondent FAIRMOUNT PARK, Collinsville, 111., June 17. — Sprinters again hold the spotlight here at the Collinsville course Friday night, when six speedy short-distance horses, meet in the Madison Purse, a six- J furlong dash for a ,400 purse. Despite the fact that the race is not of the highest calibre of sprinters, it is a well-matched sextet. Making her second start of the meeting is Ella Ville, from the Midwest Stable, who will probably rule favorite off her one and only other start of the meeting. She was a gamely closing second to Scarlet Time in a six-furlong dash which was run in 1:11%, good time for this type of horses. In that race last week, Ella Ville showed good determination and was closing strongly. Prior to that outing, this filly raced at Ascot Park in Ohio and also at Lincoln Downs earlier in the season without too much success. First Spin, from the M. F. Keeley Stable, figures next best off his one good race here when he was a strong second to Tatten-ham in an allowance affair. First Spin is game and in a sprint of this type may prove good enough to earn his first set of brackets at the meeting. This will mark the sixth start of the session for the Keeley sprinter. Bill Terry, Jr.s newly acquired Saracen Devil, who was obtained via the claiming route, looms as a very dangerous foe in the Madison event off his two victories this meeting, one for ,000 and the other for a claiming price of ,500. Although still a three-year-old, he should make a good showing against his five older opponents. Rounding out the field for the Friday night feature are Real Sir, who is making his first start of the meeting; M. White-book stables Okla Belle, with two starts here thus far, and Coral Princess, owned by Mrs. S. Orr, with only one outing here. Hopeful Sam carried the silks of Mr. and, Mrs. H. P. Triplett to victory in his third start of the meeting to win the major portion of the Hotel Greeters Purse, the headliner on the Wednesday night card, before a cheering crowd of 5,700 fans that enjoyed the sport under ideal racing conditions. The Triplett seven-year-old son of Beau Tod, under the guidance of jockey E. Coffman, was a bit tardy in getting into his best stride but, once on the move, steadily gained on the leaders. Coffman brought his mount to the outside after reaching the stretch and, being best, wore down the early pacemaker 70 yards from Continued on Page Twenty-Seven Ella Ville Accorded Edge In Fairmount Park Sprint Well-Matched Field of Six Will Parade to Post in Madison Purse Continued horn Page Fnre the finish, then drew out slightly. Hopeful Sam ran the -six furlongs in 1:11%, the fastest time of the night over a racing strip that miraculously was missed during the afternoon by a terrific storm that hit all around the area. Backers of the winner received 4.80. Cross End, from the Earl Brown Stable and also making his second start of the meeting, had set the pace from the start, but didnt have enough left in the final drive to stall off the winner, but was much the best of the others — finishing three and a half lengths in front of the third horse, Port o Gold, a field horse. Keeping Posted, the favorite, who was making his first start of the meeting since being shipped here from Fort Miami at Toledo, Ohio, had no chance after the start as he went to his knees leaving the gate, which cost him his chances. Although he didnt go down, he was no factor. Jockey Ned Merritt, who was thrown from Zoom just after the start of the fourth race Wednesday night, was found to have suffered a dislocated left shoulder and an injured thumb. Merritt is at the St. Marys Hospital, East St. Louis, HI. Apprentice R. White was forced to cancel his mounts after the fourth race Wednesday night because of heat prostration.
