Six-Horse Field Named For Cudgel at Aqueduct Bassanio, Flaunt and Matagorda Entered in Nine-Furlong Feature AQUEDUCT, L. I., N. Y., June 17.— The ,500 Cudgel Handicap at a mile and a furlong is the feature event here at the Queens County Jockey Club course Friday. A field of six, headed by Ogden Phipps Bassanio with 122 pounds, has been named for this event, and all six turned in poor races in their last outing, but most of them have other good efforts in their fairly recent past. Bassanio, Saga Stables Flaunt, and Joe W. Browns Matagorda, 119, all finished unplaced in -the Queens County Handicap on Monday. Bassanio preceded this dull effort by finishing second to Straight Face in the Suburban arid winning a mile and a sixteenth test at Belmont Park. Ted Atkinson will ride the Bimelech four-year-old Friday. Flaunt finished a length and a half before Bassanio in the Queens County, which he won last year, and had finished second to Matagorda in his previous outing at Belmont Park. After being in trouble at the first turn, Flaunt came on with a menacing rush rounding the final bend in the Queens County, then faltered in the stretch. Matagorda followed his victory over Flaunt at Belmont Park by turning a completely dismal effort in the local stake, being far back all the way and showing no inclination to improve his position. - The other three in the Cudgel are Frank C. Rand, Jr.s Begorra, 118; Frances de Luros Turgueneff, 108, and Stephen Messanas King Jolie, also 108. Begorra, who doesnt have the constitution to maintain his peak form for any length of time, has been freshened a bit since finishing behind Matagorda and Flaunt at Belmont Park two weeks ago and is capable of winning in this company on his best form. Eddie Arcaro will be in the saddle. Turgueneff showed little in the Frere Jacques Handicap at a mile and three furlongs on the grass last Saturday or in his previous start, but finished with a rush to be second to Royal Governor on May 22. Though regarded as a grass specialist, Turgueneffs only victory in this country was on the dirt track at Gulfstream Park. King Jolie, who will be ridden by Bill Boland, finished a distant last in a sprint here on Tuesday.
