Knights Reward Sportsmans Victor VanBerg Gelding Closes Fast To Nip Deb Chaser by Nose; Timely Tip Third in Photo By J. J. MURPHY SPORTSMANS PARK. Cicero. 111., May 7.— Knights Reward, a six-year-old gelding owned by Marion VanBerg, won his second straight handicap at this meeting when he came very fast on the outside in the stretch to be up in time to annex the major honors in the 0,000 Sportsmans Handicap here this afternoon. He edged out Deb Chaser, who had served as the early pacemaker; while Timely Tip, making his first start over this course, was third. It was a mile and a sixteenth affair, and the winners time on a fast track was l:493/5-Knights Reward paid 3.20. Jockey Ralph Borgemenke, recently signed by the Bishop Stable, rode his first winner of the meeting in the opening race. He was aboard Bishops Best Wishes, an outsider, and she wore down Gleaming Doll in the stretch. Russell TS was the favorite, but was unable to make the turns and was not a contender. Baldwin in Saddle Jockey Ronnie Baldwin, one of the leading riders at the meeting, was aboard Knights Reward and he rated his mount fairly well up for the first six furlongs. He chose to go outside to make his run rounding the stretch turn and his charge gained steadily in the stretch to win by a nose. A like distance separated Deb Chaser from Timely Tip. A field of nine went to the post, and Deb Chaser, fast to leave the gate, made the early pace. Rain threatened in early afternoon and the attendance was several thousand persons lighter than that of the previous Saturday. A total of 16,656 passed through the turnstiles. The skies cleared about mid-afternoon and the sun was shining when the feature event was called to the post. Best Wishes, an outsider, combined with Fiddlin Mac, the favorite, in the second race for a 18.20 Daily Double. Fiddlin Mac, ridden by Richard Lawless, had speed from the start and had little trouble winning by three lengths. Silver State, a three-year-old, was the first public choice of the day to reward, and he did so impressively scoring by eight lengths, with jockey Bennie Green sitting chilly. Silver State changed stables following the event, being claimed from John Beck by E. K. Carey for ,500. Each of the first three events were at seven furlongs. Easy Dough, an outsider, was up in time to defeat Charles, another longshot in the fourth. Amulika set most of the pace, but Charles took over in the stretch, then along came Easy Dough, with Richard Miguez in the saddle to be up in the closing strides to win by a head. Slo Moe, the favorite, was fourth. The distance was one and one-eighth miles. Jockey Borgemenke rode his second winner of the afternoon aboard W. H. Bishops Just Judy, who was the public choice, in the sixth race. Just Judy, winner of her last start, came to the outside in the stretch to pass Pussy Cat and Restraint in the last sixteenth and score by a fair margin.
