■ 1 1 1 — wmmmmfKfllm , Recent Victory in Roman Classic Stamps Theodorica Leading Filly I ; By F. LANDES Rome Correspondent, Daily Racing Form ROME, Italy. — Since her 15-length victory in the Roman classic, Premio Regina Elena, equivalent to the Italian 1,000 Guineas, at one mile, there can be hardly any doubt about the rank the beautifully bred Owen Tudor filly, Theodorica, commands in her generation. Calling her the top filly of the year is probably expressing it mildly , because because many many horse horse-* - ► — ■ 1 1 1 — wmmmmfKfllm because because many many horse horse-* - men here believe her to be equal to her unbeaten stablem ate Ribot, leader of the three-year-olds. Last Sunday at San Siro in Milan Theodorica romped off with the Italian Oaks at one mile and three furlongs confirming once more her rise to stardom. Because of her obvious superiority, only four rival fillies cantered to the starting gate of whom Gherardina was the Dormello-Olgiata Stables second entry. Razza Del Soldos Chiadina was the only serious challenger of the allied couple, while the other two, Conders Moka and Quiz, were presumably shooting only for fractions of the ,500 purse. There was virtually no betting on the race as no odds could be obtained for the winning combination. But racegoers did not mind and they watched with admiration as Theodorica scampered from one end to the other, crossing the finish eased up, six lengths ahead of her stable companion. Gherardina, after a short struggle, got the better of Chiadina by two lengths, completing the triumph of the Tesio silks. She could be a worthy representative of her stable in the Derby but, according to latest reports, her participation is rather doubtful. AAA Theodorica and Ribot, lacking the Derby engagement, Sundays main event at Romes race track Capannelle gave fans a pointer to the possible wearer of the sophomore crown. This first European Derby will be decided next Thursday. The ,700 Premio Conte Felice Scheibler at a mile and three furlongs provided the clash between the Razza Del Soldos Gail, second on the Free Handicap list and soundly beaten this season by Ribot in the Premio Emanuele Filiberto at San Siro at one mile and a quarter, and the Castelverde Stables unbeate Altrek, who was able to transform the three outings of his career into as many victories. Trained and ridden by veteran jockey Paolo Caprioli, the son of Tesio-bred Grand Prix and St. Leger winner Antonio Canale amazed fans by the effortless ease and speed with which he disposed of his rivals. Held back in the ruck of the six-horse field, Altrek was brought to the front on the home run, three furlongs from the wire. He sprinted clear of the opposition at once and could have been eased before reaching the winning pole, six lengths in front of Count Neni da Zaras imported, French-bred Ta-bou, who preceded the favorite Gail by two lengths. Another two and a half lengths behind, the Mantova Stables Mor-bin was fourth. AAA Altrek at 3-2 was the second choice and like his father he relished the dry grass ► — course and was clocked in the excellent time of 2:19y5. Within twelve days the promising youngster will face the supreme test as a three-year-old and it seems that he will be the odds on favorite in the seventy -second Italian Derby. He is the first thoroughbred colt of his mother Aleta by the Teso-bred Derby winner Navarro out of the Cavaliere dArpino mare Arpisanda who, before him, foaled a filly after the standardbred trotter Con- dottiero. Thie experiment was typical with the Castelverde stable, well known and ! prominnet breeder and proprietors in the I harness race field. AAA On the same program Razza Ticinos foUr-year-old Verdun excelled in another victory in the traditional ,500 Premio Ellington over the derby distance of a mile and one-half in the fast time of 2:33%. The same colors scored their second success of the day on the Orsenigo filly En-treves in the ,700 Premio Minerva for three -year-old fillies at a mile and three furlongs. Entreves won easily by three lengths over the Mantova Stables Nobile Veneziana in 2:22% which increases respect for Altreks achievement. The days card was pleasantly completed with the first juvenile race of the year. Six two-year-olds met in a five furlong sprint which the Scanno colt Arione, favored by his post position on the inside rail won handsomely in 1:10. A A ■ Last Saturday was inauguration day at the International Horse Show at Romes Piazza di Siena, pine tree-lined center of , Europes most magnificent Rennaissance Park, Villa Borghese. For this event of unequalled social magnitude six nations, Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Great Britain and Ireland sent their best teams, totalling 84 internationally famous jumping horses. Forty outstanding whips, led by the world champion, the German H. G. Winkler, last years world champion, Spains F. Goyoaga and Frances Olympic games crack J. dOriola were active, as well as talented Amazons. AAA For opening day, favored by ideal warm summer weather, a smart, international crowd of socialites assembled. They applauded warmly the fine horsemanship. The Italian hosts, took seven of the ten places in the main event, Premio Viminale. Capt. Piero dInzeio, who entered the arena last when evening shadows were descending, sent his mount, eight-year-old gelding Somalo, at breath-taking speed over the obstacles, registering the best time of the day and scoring a wildly acclaimed victory. Spains Commander M. Ordovas on Bo-hemio, who seemed for quite a while to be unbeatable, was second and Frances dOriola was third on Charleston. All the other faultless jumpers with tlie exception of one Spaniard, were Italians.
