Phipps Parnassus and Sam Tufanos 3-5 favorite, Wise Margin, engaged in a smashing stretch-long duel to highlight the 0,000 Governors Handicap and at the finish it was the gallant five-year-old . War Admiral stallion Parnassus s who showed in front by a thrusting nose. . Another length behind the runner-up came Harvey Fruehaufs Precious Stone, this threesome off by itself, with J._ L. Friedmans fourth -placed Wabash Moon some seven distant lengths back. Presentation was made by Joseph B. Ely. chairman of the board of the Eastern Racing Association and former Governor of Massachusetts. Precious Stone on the inside and Larry Ellis were quickest to begin, although no one in the six-horse field appeared to want the lead in the early going. Into the clubhouse turn, Madden tired of this cat-and-mouse game and sent Parnassus to the front, with Wise Margin in closest attendance and Bobby Ussery standing straight j i i up in his stirrups in an effort to rate i j Larry Ellis. j Down the far side, Parnassus continued to cut out a sizzling pace, caught in 1:12$. ! j for the six panels. Wise Margin was never more than half a length farther back and | j j Larry Ellis in good position for a move, a pair of lengths behind Wise Margin. j j Turning for home, Vernon Bush on Wise Margin brought his mount up to reach the j ! leader at the five -sixteenths pole, but Mad- j j den would have none of this. He hit Par- i j j nassus and his mount responded, bringing him into the race for the wire, in front by a fraction. Here Parnassus showed his class, breeding ana the benefit of his weight advantage, outraced his equally gallant foe to the line.
