Bassett to Retire From Ring As Result of Injury to Eye PHILADELPHIA, Pa. May 7 UP.— Percy Bassett, the great little fighting machine who did most of his boxing in Paris after he punched himself out of opponents in America, will retire as the result of an injury to his left eye. Bassett, the interim featherweight champion who underwent an examination at Wills Hospital last Thursday when he complained of "a shadow" in front of him, will be operated on Monday. He will spend the next 30 days in the hospital after the surgery to correct a detached retina.
