Woodley Lane Farms Red Hannigan outfinished James Cox Bradys Artismo Dy a head at the end of a torrid seven furlongs that thrilled a throng of 35,883. Brookmeade Stables First Aid was only a half length farther back and a length before Joe W. Browns Bobby Bro-cato. Paul Bailey rode the winning son of Heliopolis — War Damsel, by Man o War, who was somewhat neglected at 6.80 and required 1:24*5 for the seven furlongs. His victory netted 1,100 to Joe Strauss, Lafayette Ward of San Antonio, Texas, and Steve Wilson of Providence. R. I., who race as the Woodley Lane Farm. Due de Fer Sets Pace Due de Fer set the early pace in the Roseben, followed by Blessbull. who faded badly after a half mile. Due de Fer held on a little longer, then Bobby Brocato moved into command, but was racing in the deep footing along the rail, closely followed by Artismo, with Red Hannigan and First Aid spaced out behind him. Bobby Brocato continued to lead into the stretch, but began to tire passing the eighth pole and Artismo took the lead soon after the pole. The Brady colt was immediately challenged by Red Hannigan, and though he fought on gamely, was unable to hold the Heliopolis colt in the final yards. Two lengths farther back came Mrs. Tom Wallers Mahopac, while C. V. Whitneys Full Steam was three and a half lengths farther back. A prohibitive choice for his first start since August, the son of Roman from Bugroo Maid paid .50. Commonwealth came up from South Carolina last sprfng hailed as one of the fastest colts of all time and merely galloped in his debut here, but then suffered a series of illnesses and injuries that sidelined him until the Saratoga meeting. He showed in two start there that he was not yet himself and was retired until today. The Tea-Maker Handicap on the turf course was a thriller, but would have been a cleaner race had Dead Duck not stumbled soon after the start and lost Angel Valen-zuela, then succeeded in interfering with Cascanuez, Kaster and Prince Hill, the three favorites, at various stages of the mile and three furlongs. Harry L. Farms Lovely Wave won the test by a nose over Kaster, who led Prince Hill by a neck, while Cascanuez was three and a half lengths farther back and had the most valid excuses, being carried wide by Dan Giddings the first turn, hampered by Dead Duck all around the far turn and was then blocked in the stretch. Prince Hill, who closed with a rush, was bothered by Dead Duck as he started his move turning for home, while the loose horse then leaned on Kaster through the final sixteenth, finishing on a line with the three leaders. George Glassner rode Lovely Wave, who paid 8.30 and was timed in 2:18%, one second slower than the track record set by Kaster last June. In addition to the incidents provided by Dead Duck, Marthas Wave and Sickles Sound ran off the course above the head of the stretch. The race was as episodic as a steeplechase and only lacked the obstacles.
