Jones Pitches No-Hitter As Cubs Beat Pirates, 4-0 United Press Sports Writer Sam Jones, a stringbean righthander discarded by the Cleveland Indians last winter, yesterday threw the first no-hit, no-run game of the 1955 season, sparking the Chicago Cabs to a 4-0 triumph over the Pittsburgh Pirates. It was the first winning no-hit game by a Cub pitcher in nearly 40 years. . On Aug. 31, 1915, James Lavender blanked the Giants, 2-0, on no hits while May 2, 1917, Hippo Vaughn held Cincinnati hitless for nine innings but lost the game in the 10th, 1-0, as Fred Toney pitched a 10-inning no-hitter for the Redlegs. Jones was in trouble only in the ninth inning when he walked the first three batters, Gene Freese, pinch-hitter Preston Ward and Tom Saf fell. But he struck out Dick Groat on three pitched balls, Bob Clemente on five and Frank Thomas on four pitches. In all Jones struck out six batters and walked seven, but Pittsburgh had only four base runners until the ninth. Two wert knocked out on double plays and another was caught stealing-. i
