Super Bug Proves Best In Feature at Suffolk Never Dangerously Threatened After Taking Long Early Lead By FRED GALIANI SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 12.— Leading from soon after the start, Greenbrier Stables Super Bug captured the featured Saugus Purse this afternoon to earn his first victory of the season, although it was the second time he had finished first in seven races this season. In his previous effort he was disqualified and placed second for bearing out in the late stages of the race. It was a different story this afternoon, as the three-year-old colt opened up a long lead and was never dangerously threatened. At the finish of the mile and 70 -yard purse, Super Bug was a length to the good of M. M. Gettingers Chris Cross, while Miss Ann Uhlars General Goya was another two and a half lengths back. Norman Mercier rode a confident race on Super Bug, who paid .20 and rattled the distance over a fast track in 1:42%. It was another sunny but windy afternoon and a crowd of 10,852 turned out for the sport. Super Bug, a bay son of Super Duper — I Bug Bug, was making his seventh start of the season. His score came at the direct expense of the favorite, who has finished in the runner-up hole with monotonous ■ regularity. This was the 11th time in 23 starts over a two-year-period that he has been second, with one victory to his credit. The winner was outbroke by the little filly, Maries Best, but outran her to the turn and took the lead on the outside. i Maries Best and General Goya came next i in line, with Burnt Throat, Chris Cross, George Ardan and Wellfleet following. 1 Burnt Throat was under a tight hold when in close quarters on the first turn. I Super Bug opened a four-length lead down the far side, with Maries Best and General Goya still the closest. When the field hit the turn, the pursuers started to tighten up, with Chris Cross closing up on | the leaders. Maries Best dropped out of it midway of the turn, leaving General Goya to do the immediate chasing, while Chris Cross now moved into third position. The favorite passed General Goya during the stretch run and was under a hard drive to catch Super Bug. but it was in vain. The latter was confidently hand ridden by Mercier and had a length to spare at the finish. ■ In the fifth race Romantic Roman sped I six furlongs in 1:10% to triumph for Henry Fiol and the five-year-olds time equaled the best of the meeting. Marshal at Arms set the seasons standard last Saturday in the co-feature race. *
