Tahiti Topweighted in Ten-Horse Okapi Handicap Field at Belmont Meets Peter Lane, Bicarb, 1 Chief Fanelli, By Jeepers And Hypnosis at Six Panels By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 12— The ,000 Okapi Handicap at six furlongs occupies the featured sixth spot on Tomorrows Belmont program, followed by the Phalanx Purse of the same value at a mile and a furlong. Walter M. Jeffords Tahiti, who has been racing brilliantly in Maryland, heads the Okapi Cap with 124 pounds, eight more than he carried in his recent Sprint Handicap victory at Laurel. Though he has never fared too well on New York tracks, the son of Polynesian has a distinct measure of class and will command considerable support. Tony DeSpirito will ride. Several of the Okapi candidates met in a dash here on April 27 in which County Clare narrowly defeated Red Hannigan, who came back to win the Roseben. Ethel D. Jacobs Peter Lane was third in that event, less than a length before Flying L. Stables Chief Fanelli, while Allen H. Smiths By Jeepers was far back and Hal Price Headleys Revolt finished last. Since that dash, Peter Lane went to Garden State, where he failed to give chunks of weight to Cash on May 4. Bill Boland will ride the Jacobs gelding, who will probably be favored. Belair Studs Game Chance, who has not been seen since Gulf stream Park, but often races at his best when fresh, will be ridden by Jess Higley and must be given a solid chance. The others in the Okapi are Mrs. Charles Silvers entry of Hyphasis and Ruthred, who would be formidable on their best form, which is rather distant; Mrs. Phil Biebers Bicarb, who prefers more distance, and Bee Gee Farms good mare, Petal, who has been on the sidelines since November. The presence of Eddie Arcaro on Hyphasis will attract some attention to this veteran, whose last race was a dull effort behind Post Prandial at Garden State. Nine have been named for the Phalanx Purse, headed by Ethel D. Jacobs erratic Man of Destiny with 122 pounds, including Eddie Arcaro. Calumet Farms Scotsmans Bond with jockey Bill Boland; Greentree Stables Palm Tree, Ted Atkinson; Herbert G. Brooks Best Auber, Kenny God-kins, and Lester Manor Stables Near Shore, with Legn Buttler seem the chief contenders here with U3 ppufids each, C. V. Whitney s Ming YelW, rl 12 pounds and apprentice Jimmy Cangemie, is capable of scoring a surprise here. The field is completed by Winning Count, Dear Brutus and Isasmoothie. The laUer could win it all1 If he would be fcbnfent U.leandve the. gate with his field. • ■
