For Balmoral Meet Trentonian to Head String Ben Jones Will Campaign at Homewood; Dixiana on Hand HOMEWOOD, 111., May 12. — Calumet Farms returns to Chicago racing for a full Spring-Summer campaign beginning Monday at Washington Park when the Balmoral Jockey Club inaugurates its 30-day meeting. The Calumet division and trainer Ben Jones, who missed the 1954 season, are due in from Kentucky this week end in time for the Balmoral debut Monday. Hasty House Farm, an old Calumet rival, also is expected shortly at Washington Park to launch an all-out assault on the 39 stakes programmed at Balmoral, Arlington, and Washington. As part of pre-meeting festivities. Chicago fans have been invited to get a look at what goes on behind the scenes of a typical racing day in a specially-arranged Open House1 Sunday at Washington Park, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Mrs. Gene Markey, owner of Calumet Farm, bypassed the summer Chicago program last year since she felt Calumet lacked its traditional strength for a successful performance. This year. Jones will bed down a strong, representative stable, headed by Trentonian, Calumets chief hope in the three-year-old division. Prospect for Chicagoon The bay son of Bull Lea— Iron Maiden is scheduled for action in The Chicagoan, 0,000 added mile test for three-year-olds, June 18. He also is a candidate for both the 00,000 Arlington Classic and the American Derby at Washington Park. Calumet also will have strong contenders j in Balmorals filly and mare competition. Ben Jones is expected to saddle Lap Full and Bubbley in Balmorals many events for distaff members. Lap Full won two straight allowance affairs at the recent Kentucky meetings. In her most recent victory she defeated such prominent filly stars as Blue Violin, Oil Painting and Jen jay. "A census of the growing equine population at Washington Park for the Balmoral I session boasts of many of the nations top-name stables. New arrivals already stabled and primed for Mondays opener include 23 horses of the Dixiana Farm under trainer Jack Hod-gins from Louisville. Trainer Frank Sanders also checked in , from Lexington with 30 horses, represent- I ing the Reverie Knoll establishment. Among those stabled on the grounds are Smoke ! Screen, who is being pointed for Mondays LaSalle Handicap. Reverie Knoll joined J. P. Watts 15-horse string from Maryland. Also bedded down from Maryland are 16 thoroughbreds owned by Mark Leachs Greenacres Stock Farms, headed by Mr. Prosecutor, also a candidate for the opening-day LaSalle.
