Golden Admiral/Tallies in Baltimore Spring Cap Whips Admiral George as Meet Opens at Pimlico Before 9,134 By CHARLES HATTON PIMLICO, Baltimore, Md., May 8. — Golden Admiral carried the day as another stakes spangled Pimlico meeting opened before a crowd of 9,134 here this blue and golden afternoon when he forged to the front in the last stride of the five and one-half furlongs Baltimore Spring Handicap under top weight of 119 pounds. The five-year-old Polynesian stallion subdued Martin Kaplans Admiral George, whom he conceded nine pounds, by a short head. It was a length back to Duke Singers Hangover, who finished third under his burden of 116 pounds. The favored War Age could only be fourth in a starting field of .11. Mrs. Henry Obres successful performer returned a jubilant handful 6.80 for in the tote while adding ,250 to his own account. The race was worth a total of 1,875 and it was incidentally the first stakes event ever won by his energetic young rider Anthony Russo. Golden Admiral went over the distance in glib going in :23%, :47% and 1:07. Bishop had been training him especially for an allowance race at that meeting and sold him with the proviso thai his new owner start him in this event, which he won by a neck the same breathtaking fashion he accounted for the . Spring Handicap. Earlier in the season -Golden Admiral had been placed in the Southern Maryland, and third in the Burch Memorial. There was no question about his supremacy today, though he only loomed as a contender sweeping into the stretch. The runner-up Admiral George and the-third to finish, Hangover, were the most aggressive leaving- the gate, with Hangover having a bit "the better of this skirmish the hot corner atop the stretch, where War Age moved into second position as Admiral George went to the front. Coming* to the furlong pole War Age began to beat retreat and Admiral George appeared a certainty. But on the outside, moving forward with an irresistible rush from fourth position, Golden Admiral began to whittle away his adavntage. Admiral George fought back stoutly over the final 70 yards when his rival ranged alongside, but he missed by a head in a desperate finish. So far as we could see there was no excuse for any of the field in the way of what is politely called racing luck. • Following the finish Golden Admirals gracious owner, Mrs. Obre, appeared in the winners enclosure to receive the trophy emblematic of success in this stake from Dr. R. Walter Graham, comptroller for the City of Baltimore.
