Keep Temple Gwathmeys Value of 0,000 Added Increase Purses for Two Other Steeplechases at United Hunts NEW YORK, N. Y„ May 8.— Amory L. Haskell, president of the United Hunts Racing Association, announced today that the added value of the Temple Gwathmey Memorial Steeplechase, to be renewed at Belmont Park in October, will again be 0,000, making the race the worlds richest chase stake for the second consecutive year. He also revealed that the prizes for two other stakes To be staged at the United Hunts two-day meet — dates for which have not .been announced as yet — will be increased. The events with higher purses are the New York Turf Writers Cup, raised in value from 0,000 to 5,000, and the Louis E. Stoddard Jr., to be worth 0,000, a hike of ,000 over its 1955added money. Haskell pointed out that the United Hunts has not failed to conduct a race meeting since its inception in 1905 and said that the associations session at Belmont Park last year October 20-21 set new records for entries, attendance and wager- ing. He anticipates that these standards will be bettered in October. The United Hunts turf programs will climax at least 20 weeks of major track steeplechasing and 26 days of hunt meet sport spread over 20 weeks.
