Needles Slated to Arrive at Pimlico Today for His Preakness Engagement Several Other Candidates For 00,000 Stakes Also Due to Put In Appearance PIMLICO, Baltimore. Md., May 8.— The Kentucky Derby winner, Needles, the colt with the most thrilling stretch run since Whirlaway, is scheduled to arrive at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore at 10:45 a. m. Wednesday to prepare for the 00,-000 Preakness on Saturday, May 19. The son of Ponder will be accompanied by his colorful trainer, Hugh Fontaine, a pony and 10 running-mates from the D and H Stable of Bonnie Heath and Jack Dudley. . Three other eligibles for the eightieth edition of the Preakness, middle jewel in the Triple Crown, are also due at Pimlico on Wednesday. These are Calumet Farms Fabius. who ran second to Needles last Saturday in the Derby, and Count Chic and No Regrets, the Californians who finished fourth and seventh, respectively. They are scheduled to arrive by van during the afternoon. One other prominent Kentucky Derby horse, the surprising Come On Red, also is certain to arrive at Pimlico soon. That is because his owner, Helen W. Kellogg, paid a ,500 supplementary fee to make the colt eligible. He was not on the original list of 17 nominations that closed February 15. Golf .Ace, second to Needles in the 00,-000 Flamingo at Hialeah this winter, also was made a supplementary nominee, by Winding Way Farm. Adding the 5,000 in supplementary fees to the established pot and a probable starting field of 12 the Preakness would gross over 35,000. Ten coifs eligible for the Preakness already are on the grounds at Pimlico, which opened its spring meeting today, but most of them are long-shots, who may settle any aspirations for a starting berth next Monday in the ,000 Preakness Prep. The Prep is at one and one-sixteenth miles, while the Preakness-is one and three-sixteenths miles.
