Sportsmans Park By J. J. Murphy John Oros Family Racing Stable Again Name Juvenile Wise Eddie After Ex-Star Skoronski Will Be Out About Three Weeks . SPORTSMANS PARK, Cicero, 111., May 8.— About 20 years ago John Oros, an Aurora, 111., grocer, decided to buy a horse, and that decision changed his whole pattern of life as well as that of his family. The horse Was named Wise Eddie, and it seemed as if he could do nothing wrong. He won race after race and Oros acquired other horses and sold his store to devote his time. to his turf interests. His sons, John Jr. and George, caught the bug, and both became jockeys. John, seemingly the better reinsman of the two, rode winners of several important stakes, including the Peabody Memorial, La Salle Handicap, Illinois Owners Handicap, and the Debutante at Churchill Downs. Eventually both John and George became too heavy to be jockeys. But did they retire form the turf? Indeed not. They sought some other line of activity in connection with thoroughbreds, and in partnership now operate a "tack" shop at Hawthorne having for sale saddles, whips and other equipment necessary forjcckeys. And did papa John go back in the grocery business? No. He bought a farm near Aurora where he raises a few horses. And now the entire Oros family is back in the business of racing thoroughbreds and they have a two-year-old on the backstretch here to which they point with pride. And the youngsters name? Wise Eddie, what else. He is by Battiefire, out of their mare Fun Quest, and they bred him. That seems to complete a cycle. Hoffman Arrives With Tomlinson String Jockey Ronnie Baldwin will join the ranks of the married men this Sunday. . . . Trainer Howard Hoffman arrived at Washington Park with 12 horses owned by Mrs. Joseph Tomlinson. Heading the string is Guard Rail, winner of the Mademoiselle Stakes at Washington Park last summer and second in the Princess Pat Stakes. Also checking into Washington is trainer Albert Johnson, from California, with six runners owned by Steve Hammond; trainer J. A. Kramer, with six for L. L. Haggin III.; and Jack Hodgins, with 20 for Dixiana. ... In a three-cornered deal this morning the L. and M. Stable traded the two-year-old Hy-Field to Olen Sledge for Gallaride and about an hour later sold Gallaride to William Hal Bishop. . Jockey Roy Lumm, who is serving a suspension, departed for Detroit where he will ride the horses owned by Grace Kosiba. . . . Jockey Tony Skoronski will see no more action at this meeting and will be missing from the saddle for from two to three weeks. The injury to his groin was more serious than revealed in the initial diagnosis. . . . Jockey Karl Korte, who has been exercising the horses of Mrs. Charles Silvers, came over from Washington Park to have the mount on Im Expectin, trained by Tom Kelley, conditioner for Mrs. Silvers. . . . S. H. Bishop traded Chara to A. Pierino for Gerry Frank. . . . Word received that horseman Pete Valenti died of a heart attack at New Orleans recently. The report could not be confirmed. The turf trend in Chicago this summer is for more racing. We are faced with nine-event bills every day during the season. Gone are the days when typewriter slaves breezed six or seven events. ... Trainer Milt Resseguet has arrived at Washington Park from New Orleans with 12 horses. . . . John C. Daniel, an official here, will serve as assistant racing secretary at River Downs while Bob McAuliffe will be a steward at Fair-mount Park, and Ed Champagne placing judge at Omaha. . . . Paul Halphen, pari-mutuel manager at Fairmount Park, took in an afternoon of sport at this course Monday. . . . Last time Eddie Arcaro rode here in 1932 he was fined 00 on closing day and had a heck of a time getting together the money. So says Wingy Quinlan, who was making Eddies engagements at the time. Quinlan is now press messenger at this track, whie Eddie, if in the mood, could light his cigars with century notes and not miss them. Stallion Morphil Active at 33 Frank Peacock writes that the stallion Morphil is still doing stud duty at the age of 33. Is standing at Norfolk, Nebr.« The Nebraska climate must do something for thoroughbreds. Omaha is the only track at which we ever saw a 12-year-old .maiden go to the post. And he won the race. . . . The Balmoral Jockey Club will inaugurate a 50 cents parking tariff in the Chicago area at their coming meeting. However, they do have free bus service to and from the parking lots to the stands and mechanics who make no charge for minor repairs and changing of tires. Mrs. Charles Silvers, top racer, is Prince Noor, a stakes winning four-year-old. He is in charge of Tom Kelley at Washington Park.
