FANTINE BUSHER — Scored in the Flower Hill Purse on yesterdays Jamaica card. . Midafternoon Registers at Jamaica . Totes 124 Pounds Without Difficulty Heavy Favorite Shows -Way To Power and Devastation In Prospect Park Handicap By BOB IIORWOOD JAMAICA, L. I., N. Y., May 8.— Carrying his topweight of 124 pounds with comparative ease, Mrs. Elizabeth E. Robbins* Midafternoon charged to a convincing triumph in the featured Prospect Park Handicap here today, delighting the majority in the crowd of 19,632 that had backed him down to .60 for the customary . With Bill Boland, who was completing a double, -shaking his s ti c k beside his head, Midafternoon reached the end of the mile and a furlong a length before Albert J. Meslers Power, who Jed Sidney M. Bartons Devastation by a.length and a half. Ernest V. Landaiches Jims Whim was almost a length out of the money after setting a moderate early pace, while Greentree Stables Illusionist completed the field, trailing all the way and going wide at the final turn. Midafternoon, who was scoring his third victory of the meeting and finished fourth in the Excelsior Handicap for his only other start here, was clocked in 1:51%. It was a slowly run race in the early stages with six f;Urlongs in 1:14, but the next quarter was run in :24%, and the final furlong in :12%. George Glassner sent the lightly weighted Jims "Whim to the front leaving the gate at the furlong pole and quickly opened a daylight lead over Devastation, while Midafternoon was a couple of lengths farther back and under a snug hold. The favorite . took the clubhouse turn a little wide, fol- . lowed by Power, while Illusionist was a de-tached last and racing on the rail. The field was strung out in the run down the backstretch, but nearing the three-furlong pole the pace began to step up sharply and the leaders bunched as Jims Whim faded and Devastation took a slight lead over Midafternoon. Power was beginning a strong move on the outside, while Illusionist also closed a little ground. Outruns Devastation on Turn Curving for home, Midafternoon put -Devastation away and was not seriously troubled when Power surged up to challenge on the outside. Through the final furlong, Boland merely kept the favorites mind on his work as he went on to triumph with considerable authority. Power fought on willingly, though no match for the winner, while Devastation turned in one of his better races. Kay Jensens Birch Brook, heavy favorite in the opening six furlongs, eked out a nose decision over Stephen Messanas Pep-ito M., while W. R. Kampfer Jr.s Snoozie charged up along the rail to take the second by two lengths over Saverio Cardiles Briar Creek. The pair compiled an 8.90 Daily Double. Apprentice Bennie Sorenson rode Birch Brook, who paid .40 straight and required 1:15% for the distance over the drying-out .track. Paul Bailey was on Snoozie, who, as usual, walked away from the -gate, but got the job done in 1:14%* n and paid .20. e Another favorite rewarded the faithful h in the third event when Mrs. Lucien n Laurin s Stipertone, a gelded juvenile . by in n The Rhymer, drew away in the stretch to triumph by two and a half lengths over L. J. Diminos" Casual Friend, who finished v well to take second money by a neck over n Georgene Renicks Bluer. Elliott Menakers j Elliotts Dream, the second choice, was a weary fourth, a length out of the money. * Supertone paid .20 and was clocked in ls 1:01 over a track that had become fast. d John S. Kroeses Marullah, a strapping bay daughter of-Nasrullah from Marguery, ■e- was made the favorite for her debut in the * fourth race and woft in the style of a good !r filly. After breaking last for Bill Boland, to 0 she moved up rapidly nearing the stretch r turn, shot between horses turning for home ll and drew out to triumph by five lengths over John "Trader" Clarks seasoned Dotty - Bishop. Reginal N. Websters Capelet was e three lengths farther back and a neck be-j, fore Brookmeade Stables Achilleus, who h appeared to bother the winner a trifle near - the three-furlong pole. Marullah paid .40 il jfnd stepped the five furlongs in 1:00%. il Marullah is one of two juvenile fillies . e, Kroese retained of the 21 he bought for e 05,000 from the estate of the late William - Woodward Jr. The 19 Kroese later Sold _ brought 01,300. John S. Kroeses Omer was backed down to even money on the infield board before »g the fifth event, but was extremely rank ie during the running of this mile and a six-v teenth, seeming about to spill Bill Boland 1 into the infield as he tried to rate him on the inside going to the clubhouse turn. . ie Continued on Page Forty-Four Favorite Midafternoon Wins Feature Handicap at Jamaica - Continued from Page Seven Boland continued to try to restrain the colt in the backstretch, then the favorite refused to go from a pull to a drive and finished far back, while Bonnie Brae Stables Paint Brush swept to a* seven-length score. C. T. Chenerys Morning Watch was such second as there was, while it was another five lengths back to Mrs. Ethel D. Jacobs run quick. Bobby TJssery completed a consecutive double when he whipped Maine Chance Farms Fantine Busher to a surprise score, in the Flower Hill Purse. The daughter of Mr. Busher, though switching her tail in evident displeasure, staved off the closing rush of Mrs. Ben F. Whitakers Precious Lady by almost a length, while Lystra Farms Pegeen was only a head farther back. Mrs. S. G. Zauderers Grecian Lure, the odds-on choice, was a half length out of the money with no apparent excuse. Fantine Busher paid 8.90 and led through the six panels in 1:13.
