Carling Open Golf Purse Heads Fairmount Card Hopeful Sam Opposes Eighth-Fast Track Prospects Good By J. J. HAHN FAIRMOUNT PARK, Collinsville, 111., May 8. — With prospects of a return to a fast racing strip, the second Wednesday night program of the current session will be staged - with nine races. Heading the card is the six-furlong Carling Open Golf Tournament Purse in which nine of the best sprinters here are due to go postward. The race honors the 5,000 links meet which begins Thursday at the Sunset; Country Club in nearby St. Louis County ! and indications are that a majority of the 100 top-flight golfers expected to compete will be on hand for the race. Heading the main event is Mr. and Mrs. H.. P. Tripletts veteran campaigner, Hopeful Sam, who has won many races in this area. Expected to contest the decision against Hopeful Sam are Bright Imp, Select Barre, Solera Jr., Speed Wrinkle, Wal-Dot-O, Royal Mon, Tiger Bee and Clynon. Hopeful Sam made his seasonal debut in the Inaugural Handical and finished third to King Bebe and All Tilly, but packed top-weight of 117 pounds, giving his opponents as much as five pounds. , However, he is nicely weighted at 110 pounds and, under that impost, should give a* better performance than in his initial start when he raced far out in the track most of the way. Equally weighted with the old fellow are , I Bright Imp, Speed Wrinkle, Royal Mon, Tiger Bee and Clynon, but they are not the top-weighted ones, as Select Barre, fresh frcm a successful campaign in Cuba, drew 111 pounds despite his connections claiming the five-pound apprentice allowance. Select Barre made one appearance since his Cuban season and gave a smashing I performance May 3 when beaten a head and a nose by Easter B: and Miss Night, while Clynon is expected to be well supported because of his effort a week ago in" an allowance race when beaten a head by All Tilly. . Tiger Bee also performed in that race and, "after trailing during the early running, managed to iinish third, but was I badly beaten by the top two. | Speed Wrinkle was beaten only a neck i in the Inaugural by Hopeful Sam and is ! dropping five pounds from that performance, while Royal Mon finished last in the same heat. Bright Imp, a consistent win-, ner here in past seasons, will be making his seasonal debut, while Wal-Dot-O was a disappointment in the Inaugural. Solero Jr. defeated a band of three-year-olds May 1 and is the only sophomore in the field. Larger fields than usual make up the remainder of the card. The supporting [number is the six-furlong sixth, race in which Go Go Go will attempt to earn his .first purse of the season. He is going against the winner, Derby Play, and I Froo. Others named are Steak Bone, Jean Bird, Howi Bouthat, Cavalier Tirm and Texas Spinner. Another race that should prove interesting is the fifth at six furlongs.* In the event is Ted Yochum, who finished second in his first start here.
