Lawless Works One Mile in 1:40| Brookmeade Sophomore in Splendid Drill for Withers; Ryan Pair Also in Trials BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 8. — Brookmeade Stables Lawless, who has been sidelined since his dull race in the Flamingo at Hialeah, but has been training steadily in recent weeks, turned in an excellent mile here this morning in preparation for Saturdays Withers Stakes, which has been transplanted to Jamaica. The brown son of By Jimminy worked alone and with blinkers as he sped his mile in an impressive 1:40%. The fractions were ticked off in :35%, :47%, 1:13% and 1:27%. Jim Ryan sent the turf specialists, Lough Ree and Le Page II., a* mile in- 1:41%, which they accomplished handily and on even terms. Beau Diable in Cleyer Move Laudy Lawrences Beau Diable, another Withers eligible and winner of his last start at Jamaica, stepped a clever seven furlongs in 1:26%. He also wore blinkers this morning. N. W. Brents Foxy Ned, who has not yet started this year, whizzed out of the gate this morning, going five "furlongs in 1:00. These trials were, all on the main track, ■which was sloppy, while the "dogs" were up on the upper turn. Though the training track was classified "fast" "by the work watchers, there were comparatively few trials on the smaller strip and none by stakes horses. However, Smart Admiral stepped a creditable half in :49, while Brightest Star went five furlongs in 1:02%. Both were good moves for this track. Over at Jamaica, Hirsch Jacobs sent Searching a half in :49%, breezing, over . a muddy track as a final for* her engagement in Wednesdays Correction Handicap. Mrs. Sol Rutchicks Miss Blue Jay, who won her debut while finishing, on the outside fence, breezed a half in :52. The Aqueduct strip was also muddy this morning and there were very few trials. Lucien Laurin sent the Rosedale winner, Prophets Bell, an easy half in :50% for the only notable move of the morning.
