The supplementary nominations closed at midnight Monday. A record total of 176 colts had originally been nominated for this eightieth Preakness on February 15, at a cost of 0 each. Golf Ace finished out of the money Monday in an allowance race in New York, but trainer W. G. Williams explained that the colt didnt like the muddy track, and still needed a race under his belt. Disqualified in Wood In his latest start, prior to that, Golf Ace defeated Head Man in the Wood Memorial, only to be disqualified for interference. The colts biggest race previous to that, was a close second to Needles in the 00,-000 Flamingo at Hialeah in February. Come On Red had been entered in the Derby by trainer Oddie Clelland because of the combination of his mud-running ability and a prediction of rain for Derby Day. Though the track at Churchill Downs turned up lightning fast, his owner left him in the race and he was beaten less than three lengths in a surprising show of strength. Both Come On Red and Golf Ace are expected to be shipped to Pimlico in the next two days.
