►-— — , Quiz Show Victor In Eastern Shore Takes Measure of Odds-On Gigolo by Length Margin As Havre Meeting Closes HAVRE DE GRACE, Md., May 4.— Palatine Staples Quiz Show furnished the answer to the question of who is the outstanding juvenile development of the Maryland spring season when he romped to victory in the Harford Agricultural and Breeders Associations thirty-seventh running of the Eastern Shore Stakes. With the astute Johnny Gilbert turning in a crackerjack saddle performance, the son of Apache wore down Sal Moreittis odds-on choice, Gigolo, to win by a full length, while covering four and a half furlongs in :52%. Eight lengths behind the top pair came Mrs. S. Diaz Nickie C, with L. A. Hawkins Pro Tanto another eight lengths behind in last position. With only a quar.tet of juveniles named for the closing-day fixture, a mere 6,000 fans turned out for the program. The track was good for the early races and had improved to be fast for the feature Gigolo was backed into 7-to-10 favoritism and Quiz Show paid .40. Purchased for 0,000 Gigolo, who had a second and two victories to his credit in three appearances, was reported to have cost 0,000 when purchased privately from J. S. Phipps. Quiz Show broke with the favorite but when unable to keep pace to the turn, was eased back by the veteran Gilbert. This proved a wise move, for he seemed certain to be blocked while racing on the inside of Gigolo. This maneuver, while it kept Quiz Show out of trouble, enabled Gigolo to attain a two-length advantage. Gilbert went to work feverishly on his mount, however, and the game colt responded willinglv to carry the silks of the newly formed Palatine Stable to their first stakes triumph. The victory of Quiz Show was worth ,295 to owner Frank Rosen, who formerly raced under the nom de course of the Progress Stable. Mrs. E. H. Ellison, Jr.s Sun Bahram, a candidate for the coming Survivor Stakes at Pimlico, as well as the rich Preakness, qualified for those engagements when he raced a mile and 70 yards in 1:43% to account for the Hoppa Purse, secondary attraction on the days card. Two lengths behind the winner came C. E. Tuttles Survivor hopeful. Double Brandy. King Ranchs Swap Out, who, like the winner is eligible for both of the three-year-old fixtures, was third. Sun Bahram, under Carson Kirk, paid .00.
