1 : Sir Gordon Richards Rides U.S.-Owned Friseur to Win Special to Daily Racing Form NEWCASTLE, COUNTY, Durham, England, June 26 Reuters . Sir Gordon Richards gained one of the most popular victories in the long history of the Northumberland Plate it was first run in 1833 when he forced the American-owned Friseur up in the last 20 yards to win the two-mile event by a neck at the Gosforth track here today. Friseur, a French-bred by Transte-vere Frisette, was bought by Mrs. Richard Ryan from Baron de Rothschild in France. Trainer Noel Murless, of Newmarket, said Mrs. Ryan wanted the horse to run in Britain and he negotiated the purchase. Sir Gordon, who was riding at this track for the first time in 24 years, . delighted the thousands by riding one of his most spectacular finishes to land Friseur, the 7-to-l chance, home a neck before Chaseaway, at 100-to-8, with the 33-to-l outsider, Brumfield, third in a record field of 20.
