i FAVORED OUR CREST SCORES Higher Cloud Barred at Narragansett After Refusal at Barrier. Nix Racer Just Lasts to Beat Affirmation by Nose — Nutty and Lsaak Walton Both Triumph. PAWTUCKET, R. I., May 4.— Mrs. J. A. Nixs Our Crest, a warmly-backed favorite, made good in the Rhode Island Independence Purse, six furlongs event that featured the sport at Narragansett Park this afternoon. The winner led all the way, but Euclid LeBIanc had to put up a powerful finish to keep the Pharamond II. mare in front of Geata Irrain Stables Affirmation. The victors margin was only a nose. Mcdway Stables William Palmer finished third, two lengths off the leading pair, and Gay May, which chased the victors pace to the stretch, was fourth. Higher Cloud, coupled in the betting with Kenyon C, under Mrs. Emil Dencmarks silks, once more refused to break. He was barred by the stewards after the race, which was very much like closing the barn door after the horse was loose. Higher Cloud has always been a notoriously bad actor at the barrier. BREAKS IN FRONT. Our Crest broke in front and stayed in front in the feature. She drew off from Gay May by a length and a half as they went down the back stretch. On the turn for home, Earl Maloney Began a drive on Affirmation and the Runantcll gelding charged up so fast that he appeared a certain winner. He was a neck off the pacemaker at the head of the home lane and he was gaining ground steadily. In the final sixteenth LeBIanc set Our Crest down hard and heavy and the mare proved game enough to last it out, although she would have lost the race in a few more strides. William Palmer was fourth to the sixteenth post, then moved up to take the third award. The time was 1:12%, which is fairly fast over the deep strip here. Gay May was a very tired horse in the final yards. The day was warmer than yesterday, but overcoats were still necessary. The track was fast. Howard Kanes Master Howard led for virtually the entire distance, but was under a hard drive at the end to win the opening event by a neck over Reynolds Brothers Ah-Mi. It was a close finish, with Mrs. W. H. Canes Amercup taking the third award just half a length back of the runner-up and a neck in front of Arabic. Jimmy Ashcroft put up a beautiful ride on the winner, which finished in 1:14% over the fast but very deep course, which had been cut up even more this afternoon. WILSON RDDES HARD. A. J. Halliwells Izaak Walton, driven hard by J. G. Wilson down the final furlong, won the second event by a length over Hanna Brothers Passable in an upset score. A. S. Pierces Mr. Brook, a warm paddock tip and well meant horse this afternoon, was third, half a length off the runner-up. Pripo was fourth. The time was 1:14%. Passable began in front, but Izaak Walton went to the van at once and began to gain as they went to the far turn, showing three lengths in front of Passable. He was about two lengths in front in the stretch, but Passable came again in the final sixteenth to make a battle of it. J. Kellys Nutty took the lead soon after the start and, under a hard drive from Freddie Maschek, held it to the end to beat Mrs. W. C. Stroubes High Arch by half a length in the four and a half furlongs event for juveniles that was third on the card. J. R. Macombers Side Arm, which was raced with the pace maker, weakened in the stretch drive and wound up third, another length and a half back. Long X. was fourth past the judges. The winner finished out in :55%.
