KENTUCKY MINES SITUATION HARLAN, Ky., May 4. — State police squads armed with shotguns and pistols kept the peace today in "Bloody Harlan" County after . more than one thousand United Mine Workers Union pickets forced operators of the Clover Fork Coal Company to abandon an attempt to reopen their Kitts mines. Efforts of the Clover Fork Company to resume . operations despite the fact that operators had not reached an agreement with the United Mine Workers in New York conferences led to the demonstration by pickets. A horde of union miners invaded company : property near the Kitts mines while a group , of unidentified men drove off non-union L miners who tried to work. Another army of 400 union men were turned back by state [ police on their way to Harlan from Cumberland. ; The men were said to be from Lynch, site of the United States Coal and Coke ; Company. Two persons were hurt in the ; clashes.
