J. MURPHY HAWTHORNE, Cicero, HI., June 17.— The Calumet Farms Kentucky Derby winner, Hill Gail, made his second start of the year here this afternoon and, seemingly surprised with his light impost of 114 pounds, made good with trainer Ben Jones looking on. The Calumet star competed against five others in the ,500 Wauconda Purse and his winning margin was three and a half lengths. Doug Dodson, who at one time rode for Calumet, was in the saddle on Hill Gail, and the son of Bull Lea rand the distance in 1:10%. Hill Gail traveled five furlongs in :58 and was then taken in hand. He was an easy winner, with Dodson taking a glance back nearing the wire. Hill Gail did not get in the clear until five furlongs had been raced. Although the Calumet star was not extended too much in the first stages, Cross Ring, setting the pace, carried ,him along at a fair clip. Hill Gail entered the home lane on the inside of Cross Ring and forged to the front when ready. He was going away at the end. Futuramatic closed fairly well to take second place from Cross Ring, but the race was all Hill Gail. He far outshadowed the others and earned ,875. There was no show betting and Hill Gail paid .40 ta win and .20 to place. His victory was viewed by a crowd of 12,143 in good I weather. I Mimi Mine Disappoints Arab Actress, the fleet filly who conquered Mimi Mine here earlier in the meeting, did it again today when she ran six furlongs in 1:10% in the sixth race. The public evidently did not believe her-last effort, and they again made Mimi Mine an odds-on choice, but the best that one could j do was be fifth. Second place went to Eddie Sue, with Good Call, a recent winner here, 5 finishing third. There was no doubt of the superiority of Arab Actress. The filly who won but three ; of her 10 starts last year, tiptoed out of i the starting gate in front and was never headed or even closely approached. Her — • winning margin with W. M. Cook doing ;d the riding, was four lengths and she paid at lt .80. Her owner, Mrs. H. J. The public overlooked "Squat Jawn" completely in the first race. He was on a runner named St. Reno, whose sole claim to fame was a victory at Centennial last summer. However, Adams rode him like he was Man o* War, and won by a good margin. Adams had to do little better than sit chilly in the following race. He had the mount on Sky Princess, and as that one " had the most early speed he was never in danger although Putt Putt, a three-time winner here, made a valiant try in the stretch. Johnnys mount in the third race was a ,500 yearling purchase who was making his first start. The colt, Bonded Joe; a son of Eiffel Tower— Speed Streak, by Flying Heels, was too good for Hoosier Havoc, another beginner in the stretch drive. Adams took a dumping in the fourth. Flushed with success, his backers made Blue Lamar a short price but the best she could do was take fifth place. Mr. Blue Sky, from the Marv-Arnie Stable, was the winner, and it once again looked like old home-week in the winners circle. Dave Erb was the winning rider and Night Fighter got second money.
