Yankees Victors Over Browns, 5 to 3 Johnny Sain Saves Game for Reynolds Billy Martins Safe Blow With Bags Full in Seventh Provides Winning Markers By MILTON RICHMAN , United Press Sports Writer NEW YORK, N. Y., June 17.— Billy Martins seventh-inning single with the bases loaded coupled with Johnny Sains brilliant relief pitching chore gave the New York Yankees a 5-3 victory over the seventh-place St. Louis Browns today. Allie Reynolds, making his first starting assignment since May 22, limited the Browns to one hit until they rallied with two runs to drive him from the ,box in the eighth. Jim Dyck singled to open, the eighth and walks to Billy Hunter and Bob Young filled the bases with two out. Dick Kokos single over first base scored Dyck and Hunter, and when Vic Wertz drew his fourth straigth walk and Reynolds sixth of the game, Sain came in to pitch for the Yankees. He immediately ended the threat by inducing Dick Kry-hoski to foul out to Yogi Berra*. Martin delivered his decisive single in the seventh against relief pitcher Max Lanier. Berra and Gene Woodling had singled in succession and after Gil McDougald hit into a double play, Lanier walked Andy Carey and Reynolds to fill the bases. Martin dropped a single into center to make the score, 5-1. - *~ More Than Insurance Tallies. It appeared at the time that the runs scored on Martins blow were merely insurance tallies, but as it developed, they turned out to be the winning ones. Reynolds, explaining that he had worked on his curve ball since being assigned to the bullpen after his last previous .start, against Washington, showed it to good advantage until the Brownie uprising in the eighth., Before that frame, Clint Courtneys triple, which scored Kryhoski from first base in the fifth, was the only hit that Reynolds yielded. The victory, coming after the Browns had snapped the Yankees 18-game winning streak last night, was Reynolds sixth of the season against two defeats* Singles by Irv Noren and Mickey Mantle put runners on first and third in the bottom of the fifth and sent St. Louis starter Bobo Holloman to the showers in favor of Lanier. Noren scored on Berras pop to short center and, after two walks filled thebases, Mantle came home on a fly by pinch-hitter Johnny Mize. The Yankees scored their first run in the first inning when Woodling walked with the bases filled. Score by innings: ST.
