David Zakoor, Sr., 50, owns the horses; David, Jr., 23, trains them, and William, 21, rides them. "We think we have a good team," says the owner. "Were winning races and making money. Aside from the immediate relatives, there also are a couple of cousins, Richard and George, who own a few horses that go with the stable." Dave, Sr., who is from Windsor, Ont., also has" a brother, William, of Detroit, who owns a stable, but that is a separate operation, though the sameness of name has been a bit confusing to the public. Starting as a wholesale fruit and vegetable merchant, Dave, Sr., picked up his interest in horses from his brother about 30 years ago. Twelve years ago he began to take it seriously, buying his own stock and training it himself. The father continued as the trainer until 1952, when young Dave had learned enough about the sport to acquire his own license. Now Dave, Sr., remains on the sidelines except for an occasional word of advice. Young Bill, the jockey, began to ride in Detroit in 1948. His firslfmount, a four-year-old maiden named Kirlarney, came home a winner by 10 lengths and Bill has 1 been a busy rider for his father and many other owners since. He comes by his jockey weight through heredity — : Dave, Sr., - Weighed 108 pounds until he was 35 years 1 old, slipping to 140 only with the indulgence of easier years. Campaigning this summer in Detroit and 1 Canada, the Windsor owner has-such well-known ■ thoroughbreds as Broad Cross, Odds » Advance, Flint Night, Howard Dear, Sedulous, ■ Sandlot, Swatch, Dooly and others.
