-UNITED PRESS : r NEWS BRIEFS Douglas Grants Stay to A-Spies WASHINGTON, D.C., June 17.— Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas today granted an indefinite last-chance stay of execution to atom spies Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. The stay was granted, Douglas said, because of "serious doubts" whether the death sentence could be imposed in their case unless a jury recommends it. The jury had not done so. See Cease Fire Soon TOKYO, Japan, June 17.— All indications are that Allied and Communist staff officers have completed mapping a cease-fire line in Korea, the Communist Peiping radio said today. The broadcast, monitored, in Tokyo, made no attempt to fit this assertion in with continued Red attacks on the East Central front. Increase Parcel Post Rates WASHINGTON, D. a, June 17. — The Interstate Commerce Commission today approved a 53,525,000-a-year increase in parcel post rates. The rate increase amounts to about 36 per cent. It was asked by the post office department as one step in an effort to cut its heavy operating deficit, estimated to be about 00,000,000 for the fiscal year beginning July 1. A posjfc office department spokesman said the new parcel post rates probably will go into effect Aug. 1. De Gasperi Reaffirms Aim ROME, Italy, June 17. — Premier Alcide De Gasperis Christian Democrat party reaffirmed today its intention to form a new middle-of-the-road government, spurning "alliance" overtures from both left and right wing extremists. Party leaders met last night and issued a communique which said returns of the June 7* elections "confirmed the electorates respect and confidence in the Christian Democrat Party." President Eisenhower on Books WASHINGTON, D. C, June 17.— President Eisenhower told a news conference today that he does not want government funds used in any way to propagate Communist beliefs at home or abroad. He refused, with some feeling, to say whether in a recent attack on "book-burners" he was referring to the school of thought represented by Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy R.Martial Law in East Berlin BERLIN, Germany, June 17. — The Russian army clamped martial law on East Berlin, today as mobs of more than -100,000 angry East Germans defied the Communist regime and battled police in the streets. Soviet tanks and troops fired above the heads of the rioters with machine guns and rifles and Red East Berlin police fired directly at the demonstrators. Labor Party Platform LONDON, England, June 17.— The Labor Party promised today more nationalization including farm lands, and less dependence upon the United States if it wins back power from Prime Minister Winston Churchills Conservatives. One of the "major objectives" of the 18,000-word party platform proposed today was independence from American aid. It warned of the danger of periodic American slumps.
