D. Davis Harpeth, strongly ridden by Dale Dew, registered two and one-half length decision in the featured Van Aken Center Purse here this afternoon. It was a dreary afternoon, but good crowd of nearly 4,500 attended. Form held up well, with three favorites coming through in the first seven races. Luridi was second and the favorite, Poised Valley, ran third, another half length farther away. The winner paid 1.40 and was timed in :49 for the half mile, which was contested over a muddy strip. Embers was first to break with Oh Linda second and Poised Valley third. Poised Valley then moved up between horses to gain a short lead, but Harpeth charged through on the inside, and passed Poised Valley. Racing around the far turn, the ultimate winner was in front by a length, with Poised Valley second and Lundi, who was sluggish in breaking, moving up fast in third position. At the head of the stretch, Harpeth con-1 tinued on gamely under mild urging and Poised Valley took a very wide swing and lost valuable ground. In the final sixteenth, Harpeth drew clear by a good-sized margin and Lundi displaced the favorite in the runner-up position. Harpeth was making his first start in over four months. The Good Luck Stables Gino Gray, given an excellent ride by Eddie Plesa, came through with a hard-earned three-quarters of a length decision over Just Free in the fifth race at six furlongs. Just Free was another three-quarters of a length before French Rocket. While on the clubhouse turn, the ultimate winner was sloughed by French Rocket and knocked to the outside and off stride. Meanwhile, Junket had moved up to wrest command and led by three lengths as the field raced into the far turn. Gino Gray was then fourth some four, lengths in arrears and just regaining his best stride. On the stretch turn, the winner started to move up rapidly while on the outside, and in the final strides to the wire disposed of the pacesetter and drew clear. Gino Gray, who was bred by Chris Chen-3 ery at his Boswell Virginia Farm, is a finely proportioned strawberry roan son of Gino Rex— Petrel. It was his third yic-0 tory in 13 starts this season. • . . ; ; s • i L I i . ; J I » i
