. Phillies Take Over Third Place by Trimming Giants NEW YORK, N. Y., Aug: 17 UP. Bob Millers nine-hit pitching: and a four-run uprising: in the eighth inning: enabled the Philadelphia Phillies to beat the New York Giants, 5-2, today in the first game of a doubleheader and take undisputed possession of third place. Dave Koslo battled Miller on nearly even terms for seven innings, but then was routed without retiring a batter in the eighth inning. A walk and singles by Ed Waitkus, Del Ennis, Stan Lopata and Johnny Wyrstek produced three runs, sending Koslo to the showers. Miller, who struck out four and walked only one, had a three-hit shutout until Bobby Thomson opened the eighth inning with his nineteenth home run of the year. Whitey Lockmans seventh homer in the ninth added the Giants final run. "When Thomson and Wes Westrum singled af ten two out in the ninth, Jim Konstanty replaced Miller and struck out pinch-hitter Tookie Gilbert for the final out.
