Hogan Outstanding Candidate For Pro Athlete of Year NEW YORK, N. Y., Aug. 17 UP. Ben Hogan became the outstanding candidate for the Ray Hickock "Professional Athlete of the Year" award today when he won the monthly poll for the second straight time and for the third time this season. Sports writers voted the Texas golfer the outstanding pro athlete for July because of his victory in the British Open Championship at Carnoustie, Scotland, July 10. He won the June poll after his victory in the U. S. Open and the April poll after his triumph in the Masters Tournament. Hogan is the first athlete to win two straigth monthly polls in the competition for the 0,000 diamond-studded Hickok belt. Hogan received 59 first place votes and 190 points in the July balloting. Ed Mathews of the Milwaukee Brakes was second with 81 points, followed by Robin Roberts of the Philadelphia Phillies with 64.
