Eatontown Takes American Legion Leads Throughout " In Saratoga Sprint -Green Hand Rides Victor to Finish Ahead of Kaster and Acefull; Alerted Disappoints SARATOGA, Saratoga Springs, N. Y., Aug. 17. Mrs. Alfred Roberts Eatontown took the track at the start of the twenty-seventh running of the American Legion Handicap here today and still had a length and a half to spare at the end of the seven furlongs. C. Mahlon Klines Kaster finished strongly to be second, another length and a half before F. Ambrose Clarks Acefull, who headed Alfred G. Vanderbilts Indian Land. Eatontown was comparatively neglected, though he had won the Fleetwing and an overnight in earlier New York invasions this year, returning 3.70 to his supporters in the crowd of 13,072. The seven-year-old son of Eaton required 1:25 for the distance with Bennie Green hand riding through the stretch. The American Legion netted ,225 to Mrs. Roberts, who hails from Eatontown, N. J. Hugh Dufford saddled the winner, as he has for all of his New York engagements, though " A. F. "Jim" East trains him in New Jersey. Takes Command Quickly Green shot Eatontown into a daylight lead at the start of the feature, while Nilufer was closest in pursuit, followed by Easy Whirl. Kaster quickly moved up between horses to be lapped on Easy Whirl, while Acefull was a close fourth in the run down the backstretch, followed by Indian Land. Alerted dropped back to last place immediately after the start and stayed there most of the way, being displaced by Ancestor above the stretch, while Easy Whirl also dropped behind his stablemate at the finish. Eatontown continued to roll along on the lead, while Nilufer gave vain pursuit, some three lengths before Kaster, who moved over to the rail. Easy Whirl was stttl close up, while Indian Land made a threatening move on the extreme outside nearing the final curve. Straightened away for the run to the wire, Eatontown showed signs of tiring, but Green had only to rouse him mildly to save most of his lead, while Kaster finished strongly, but without getting much help from Augustine Catalano, whose rhythmic whipping suggested a boy painting a fence with whitewash. Acefull held on determinedly to outfinish Indian Land for the minor share of the purse. Alerted, who is pointing for longer races, finished fairly well, though never looking like a contender and lacking the dash that had characterized his two pre- vious races at even shorter distances. Shawnee Farms Real Objective, a twin filly by Alibhai from Offensive, by Sir Gal-i lahad III., scored at the first asking in the fifth race, a dash at five and a half furlongs for maiden junior misses. Eric Guerin hustled Real Objective to the finish almost a length before Eugene Constantin, Jr.s Beagem, the favorite, who was ridden by Henry Moreno. Woodvale Farms Star Marque was a distant third. There was con-; siderable support for G, p. Wideners Pomme dOr, who lost all chance at the start. Real Objective paid 9.90 and was clocked in 1:08. , I L l l I L t L
