Eight Juveniles at Saratoga Endeavor To Add Sanford Stakes to Their Record Affrighted, War Piper, Way- Thorn, Bushers Beam Have Shown Good Recent Efforts SARATOGA, Saratoga Springs, N. Y., Aug. 17. The forty-first running of the 0,000 Sanford Stakes for two-year-olds at six furlongs is the feature attraction at the Spa tomorrow. This dash has been won by such good ones as Regret, Billy Kelly, Devil Diver and Tom Fool and lost by such a great one as Man o War since its inaugural in 1913. A field of eight has been named for tomorrows renewal, headed by Lester Manor Stables Affrighted who carries 117 pounds because he won two dashes on the Widener straightaway. The Alsab gelding has suffered three defeats since then, the most recent being a dismal effort behind Wise Pop in the United States Hotel Stakes. Jack West-rope will ride him tomorrow. The other seven in the Sanford carry 114 pounds each, not having won more than one race of any kind. The best recent form in the Sanford is that of Four Way Ranchs Way Thorn and Eugene Constants, Jr.s Bushers Beam. Way Thorn, a Rosemont colt, won his last, with Bushers Beam a good third, while the latter colt came back to beat a presumably better field in faster time. George Hettinger will ride Way Thorn, while no rider has been named as yet for the son of Mr. Busher. Brae Burn Farms War Piper was a short-priced favorite last out, but was convincingly beaten by Bushers Beam, while in his previous start he had closed strongly to be second to Card .Trick in the Flash Stakes. Eric Guerin will ride Tommy Wallers charge and he. will again have considerable support. Christiana Stables Menemsha and Llangollen Farms Night Mission rate consideration here. Menemsha was a surprise winner in his debut at Jamaica when noticeably high in flesh, then came back to finish a tiring fourth in the Flash Stakes, while still apparently short. A handsome colt with abundant speed, he may have improved with racing, in which case he will be very dangerous. Hedley Woodhouse will be in the saddle. Night Mission won a sprint at Waterf ord Park, which is hardly a recommendation, but the son of Endeavour n. evidently showed trainer Charley Whittingham something. He was a late scratch from the Flash Stakes, then turned in a good race behind Diving Board, working his way to contention along the rail after a sluggish start, then tiring right at the end to finish fifth. He, too, seems eligible to improve. No rider has been named. The Sanford field is completed by Joe W. Browns Bobby Brqcato and Maine Chance Farms War Pointer. Bobby Bro-cato was thought good enough to be sent to Chicago for the Arlington Futurity, in which he showed nothing, while War Pointer comes from a dull race in the Flash. Ovie Scurlock will ride Bobby Brocato, while Dave Gorman is to guide War Pointer. p r m
