Larry Gammon Enters Limelight at Fairmount Rides Two Winners for His Initial Successes on a Recognized Track By WILLIAM C. PHILLIPS Staff Correspondent FAIRMOUNT PARK, Collinsville, 111., Aug. 17. Larry Gammon, a 16-year-old apprentice, who already has a background of three years of riding at the Illinois and Missouri fair and "bush" meetings, rode the first winner of, his career on a recognized race track here on Friday night, and he returned a few races later to gain his second "success. Over the years, Fairmount Park has been the "proving grounds" of many famous riders such as Teddy Atkinson, Carroll Bier-man, Charles Burr, Job Dean Jessop and Benny Green. Young Gammon will have a long road ahead to join this list, but he displays evidence that he may have the "makings." Astride More Regret, owned by his father, Thurman Gammon, in his first victory-in Fridays second race, he rode likie a true veteran and "hung it on" seasoned jockey Tommy Bates and the favored Jacks Town by a nose. He was even more impressive displaying clever form to score with Mr. and Mrs. G. B. Holmans All Tilly in the featured Spy Song Purse. The most noticeable feature about Gammon is his "hands" on a horse. They are large and muscular, and already well trained to their job, and a bright future should be ahead, if his young frame just does not grow to their proportions. His riding weight now is 104 pounds.
