V , c - - f Defense Bond Day At Atlantic City President J. B. Kelly to Be Honored; Halter Choice Over Sweet Vermouth inTeature c ATLANTIC CITY, Mays Landing, N. J., Aug. 17. John B. "Jack" Kelly, president 1 of the Atlantic City Racing Association, will be awarded a plaque tomorrow after- I noon as part of the Defense Bond Day j activities. Kelly will be presented the award as a token of the seashore courses efforts in promoting the sale of the government bonds and numerous high-ranking military officers and Treasury Department officials will participate. The feature race on the program, which also will mark the first of the weekly "ladies day" programs, is the ,000 Defense Bond Purse, a six-furlong test that has attracted a field of nine fleet sprinters. Heading the line-up are Cedar Farms Halter and A. H. Bowens Sweet Vermouth, a pair of galloping local winners, the first-named in track-record time. Others entered are High Ground Stables Landseair, B. L. Williams Passemson, Mrs. C. A. Lyons Penocc, Jay-Cee Farms Miss Nimble, Winlochan Stables Adopt, Cary C. Boshamers Miss Nosoca and Rappahannock Farms Winther. Olympic Winner in 1951 Halter, who has displayed his top form over the local strip, especially in 1951 when he won the Olympic Handicap, then came back to finish second behind Greek Ship in the All-American, which has now been discontinued, shapes up as the probable choice tomorrow. He launched a comeback : recently at Monmouth and was unsuccessful in three starts, following which he raced here at seven furlongs and won in track-record time of 1:23. Major contention in the Defense Bond figures to come from Sweet Vermouth, a six-year-old- Cassis gelding. While he has . failed to equal the sprint form of his sire, Sweet Vermouth has been a useful competitor, winning his last start by six lengths in the slop after having been purchased at private terms several days earlier. Landseair is another who has performed well here in past seasons, having been second in the 1951 Worlds Playground for two-year-olds. The Balladier colt won two of his three starts during the spring ing at Bowie this year, but victory has since evaded him successfully. His best race of l late was a second behind Hi Billee over . a sloppy strip at Monmouth Park. Still another member of tomorrows field r with good 1951 stakes form here is Miss . Nosoca, winner of the Margate during her . juvenile season. She has failed to race back I to her two-year-old form, but recent morn-f ing trials indicate she is better than" at r any time this season. I Passemson is a possible threat in the 3 feature tomorrow, for he has raced but I twice this season and showed marked im-; provement in his last, in which he was a factor for six furlongs and tired behind 3 Halter. Adopt, Miss Nimble, Penocc and f Winther figure as named behind the more . highly-regarded members of the field.
